Meese claims that he’s clean WASHINGTON (AP) — At torney General-designate Edwin Meese III said Tuesday he has met “ethical as well as legal” standards of conduct, but a report made public at the in sistence of senators concluded that he may have violated federal law. That finding was reached by two attorneys in the Office of Government Ethics, but they were overruled by the head of the office. David Martin, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan. Reagan charms ‘Bloom’ creator IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — President Ronald Reagan liked a Berke Breathed caricature of his wife Nancy in Sunday’s “Bloom County” newspaper comic strip. So much, in fact, that he call ed Breathed to offer his com pliments. Breathed, who draws his nationally syndicated strip from his home in Iowa City, said the president’s call Mon day left him with a first-hand impression of the Reagan charm. “Whatever people call it — his charm or ‘the Reagan magic* — it’s definitely there,” Breath ed said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "He was almost deferential to me. To realize he's the most powerful man in the world and he still comes across like Uncle Joe.” Sunday’s comic strip featured a frenzied middle-aged woman who is attempting to place a classified ad for a new husband — “one that won’t continually call me ‘Ol’ Dumpy.’ ” Hanging on the wall in the background of the strip was a portrait of a placid, smiling Nancy Reagan.
