The film is less original than that. It opens with a satanic ceremony in which power hungry Malcolm Graves (Michael Des Barries) gets set to sacrifice his infant son. Mom saves the day and a minion named Wolfgang {Jack Nance) raises young John (Peter Liapis), never to let him know about his past. Jump ahead twenty years. John inherits his dad’s man sion (where his dad lies in an unmarked grave, unknown to John). John finds strange oc cult books everywhere and feels some odd pull to experi ment with the mystic arts. In case viewers don’t follow, Wolfgang plays the intrusive narrator and keeps a running commentary, explaining that something “has John in its grip." If you haven’t figured it out yet, Malcolm is working on John from the grave, egging him on to acquire enough power to revive his dear oP dad. John has no idea what’s going on, but he likes the power he’s getting, and he wants more. John’s live-in girlfriend, Rebecca (Lisa Pilikan), thinks John is getting spooky and wants to get out. Meanwhile the wierdest household pets you can imagine are roaming around the mansion by con sent of master John. This isn’t the scariest or most original “B” horror flick around to be sure, but there are some surprisingly pleasant highlights. The stock stereotypes that usually feature people like these are taken a few steps fur ther under Bercovici’s guidance. Here the characters interrelate like real people, bantering and joking with the joviality of friends on a Satur day night. The film only suffers during the moments of horror, for ex ample when creatures attack lovable couples, when Daddy rises from the grave and chokes people with his eight foot tongue, when father and son battle it out with pyrotechnic sorcery — that sort of stuff. These moments are neither scary nor shocking, but mere ly dull versions of routine scenes. The only interesting idea is a rather unnerving im age of the corpses worming their way to the basement.
