(AP) — Cradling a $300 million superspy satellite in its hold, the shuttle Discovery blasted off Thursday and opened a new chapter in America’s militariza tion of space. It was the 15th launch of a space shuttle, but the first devoted solely to military purposes. Sources say the satellite is the first of a new generation of spaceborne spies capable of tracking Soviet missile tests and intercepting military and diplomatic communications in much of Europe, Asia and Africa. The first of the secrets, the ex act time of launch, was revealed dramatically. At 2:50 p.m. EST — nine minutes after NASA turned on the countdown clock for all to see — Discovery, with a spectacle impossible to hide, rose off its pad into a clear blue sky and headed eastward across the Atlantic, its thunderous roar heard for miles. The ship, as tall as an 18-story building, could still be seen with the naked eye from the space center four and one-half minutes after liftoff, 200 miles to the east and 70 miles high, as a bright but distant star. The satellite originally had been scheduled for launch in December aboard shuttle Challenger, but problems with that ship caused postponement. A rescheduled launch Wednes day was put off for 24 hours because of Florida’s freezing weather. Sanctuary aide found innocent CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Sanctuary movement worker Jack Elder was acquitted Thursday of illegally transpor ting Salvadoran aliens, in a case that pitted Reagan Administra tion policy on Central America against a growing church-led relief effort. The seven-man, five-woman federal court jury deliberated only a few hours before acquit ting Elder, the director of Casa Oscar Romero, a halfway house for Central Americans in San Benito. Elder, 41. faced up to 15 years in prison and fines totaling $6,000 if convicted. He has maintained he was acting out of his religious convictions and was being singled out by the government for prosecution. Federal officials have repeatedly maintained that Cen tral Americans entering the U.S. illegally seek economic betterment, not political asylum, as the sanctuary move ment claims.
