University hosts
music conference

The 28th Conference on Music Education, being held to
day and Saturday at the University music school, will feature
nationally known musicians and composers speaking on
“Diversity in Music Education.”
This year's conference will feature piano performance for
the first time. University piano faculty and internationally
renowned concert pianist Bela Siki will conduct classes and a
workshop on dealing with piano performance anxiety.
Highlighting the piano performance sessions will be a
concert by Siki at 8 p.m. today in Beall Concert Hall. The
1947 winner of the Concours International d’Executions
Musicales in Geneva, Siki is a professor of piano and artist-in
residence at the University of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of
Music, Admission is $3 for the general public and $1 for
students.
Karl Hats, known for his “Adventures in Good Music”
series, will present the keynote address entitled “An Air
borne View of Music Education: Utilizing Media” during the
afternoon session today, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Beall Con
cert Hall. General admission is $1 for this event.
British film-score composer John Addison will speak on
“Opportunities for Musicians in Film and Television Music”
at 10:45 a.m. Saturday in Beall Hall; and, “The Making of a
Film Score for ’A Bridge Too Far,’ ” will be at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday in Room 180 PLC, each costing $1 for general
admission.
Addison has written music for 88 pictures, including
“Sleuth,” for which he received an Academy Award nomina
tion and “Tom Jones.” which won him both an Oscar and a
Grammy in 1964.
A concert featuring the 1985 Oregon High School String
Orchestra and Honors Band will conclude the conference
Saturday at 8 p.m. at Silva Concert Hall in the Hult Center for
the Performing Arts.
The orchestra will perform compositions by Carl Bach,
Telemann and Mahler, and the band will perform selections
by Elliot. Grainger, Hazelman and Gillis.
Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Hult Center
box office at $3.50 for general admission.

The following is a list of area
crimes that have been reported
to the Eugene Police Depart
ment since Jan. 17:
Clothes, a bike lock, and two
dormitory keys were stolen
from Phi Delta Theta fraternity,
Jan. 18. According to Officer
Bill Jennings of the Eugene
Police Department, the items
were valued at $106.
The Computing Center
received a bomb threat at 4:10
p.m. from an unknown person,
Jan. 18. The building was sear
ched, and no explosive was
found.
A camera and swim goggles
were stolen from Gerlinger Hall
between Dec. 14 and Jan. 14.
The incident was reported Jan.
18. The items were valued at
$28.
A wallet, identification, and
$70 in cash were stolen from a
backpack in the main library,
Jan. 18.
A theft of $30 from a Carson
Hall dormitory room was
reported Sunday.
Four copy machines in the
main library were damaged
and $200 stolen between Satur
day and Monday. Damage to the
machines is estimated at $50.
Two backpacks were stolen
from the University Bookstore
on Tuesday, and one backpack
was stolen Wednesday.
One bike was stolen. It is
valued at $650.

Singapore gala
set for EMU
The Singapore Students
Association and the Foreign
Student Organization will bring
Singapore culture to the EMU
Ballroom on Sunday.
Following a 6 p.m. buffet din
ner will be an evening of enter
tainment kicking off at 7 p.m.
with a lion dance. Door prizes,
other Singaporean dances, live
music, slides and “Moods and
Images,’’ a film with the
Singapore Symphony Orchestra
are also in store for the evening.
Events and food will expose
Eugeneans to the four promi
nent backgrounds in Singapore:
Malaysian, Chinese, Indian and
Western.

people about what we are and
what kind of culture, what kind
of background we have,” says
Harry Tan, SSA president.
About 300 Singapore
students attend the University.
Tickets to the event are $5.50
for adults and $3 for children 12
and under.
African relief
meeting today
Stephen Kinnaird, a represen
tative of UNICEF, will be on
campus today to organize
students interested in becoming
involved in relief projects for
Africa.
Drought and famine threaten
150 million lives in Africa, Kin
naird says. UNICEF has provid
ed more than $22 million in
emergency aid and $120 million
in developmental aid to help
ease the crisis in Africa.
Kinnaird will discuss how
students can organize to sup
port this effort.
The meeting will be held in
Century Room D, EMU at 4 p.m.
