The University Theatre’s 1985 “Second Season” begins tonight at 8 p.m. with “Absurd Person Singular, ” a comedy by award-winning British playwright Alan Ayckbourne. The play, directed by graduate student Janice Joyce, explores the turmoil of six middle-class people caught between the conflicting goals of success and domestic tranquility. For tickets and information,call the box office at 686-4191. Seminar to explore men and masculinity A conference on “Men and Masculinity" will be held at the University Friday through Sunday. "Masculinity will be defined, questioned, ex plored and illuminated," says Martin Acker, con ference organizer and professor of counseling psychology. Among the speakers at the conference will be Joseph Fleck, author of "Men and Masculinity," Jed Diamond, author of "Inside Out, Becoming My Own Man,” and Lester Kirkendahl, Oregon State Univer sity professor emeritus. Topics to be covered include men and power, its uses and abuses; men relating to men, their roles and relationships: and men and sexuality, male roles and perceptions. "Men,” a multi-media presentation, is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom. The conference is sponsored by the College of Education. Division of Counseling and Educational Psychology, and the Continuation Center. One hour of academic credit is available. Cost is $55 for University faculty, $35 for students and $75 for others. The conference will be held in the EMU and Gerlinger Hall. For details, call Acker at 686-5501 or Paul Katz at 686-4231. iimiimiiii Economist to open seminar John Wilson, chief economist for the Bank of America, will give the keynote address at the Economic Outlook Seminar to be held at the Black Angus Restaurant Friday. Wilson will also speak on the “The Global Economy: Economic Stagna tion or Growth Renaissance” in Room 101, EMU today at 3:30 p.m. Wilson has taught at Yale and other universities, has been an adviser for several government agencies, and is the author of “The Power Economy: A Global Search for an Economy that Works.” The seminar, sponsored by the University economics department, will be held from 3-5 p.m. with a social hour following. Wilson’s speech will be followed by a panel discussion with John Mit chell, editor of Oregon Business Barometer; Les Anderson, former mayor of Eugene; and University economics Prof. Randall Eberts. Economics Prof. Barry Siegel will moderate. Tickets for the seminar are $10 and will be available at the door.
