Orcjiim 343-84NX letters Blunderous If the headline story (ODE Jan. 15) is correct, then (a) Governor Atiyeh is stupid, or (b) the Emerald has given us yet another blunderous news story. I tend to think the latter. According to the story, Atiyeh is suggested to have said that “Oregonians have three alternatives to the sales tax.” Those alternatives are quoted as: 1. “A 1.5 percent property tax limitation” 2. “Crown(ing) Oregon as the r undisputed income tax capital of the nation” 3. (The only favorable alter native:) “A. carefully written sales tax ...” Therefore, if I understand the story correctly, the only favorable alternative to the sales tax is the sales tax. Now, in fairness to the Emerald, I searched other newspapers for a similar quote or reference to the Governor’s speech and found none. So what’s the story. Emerald Editors? Is Governor Atiyeh stupid, or has the Emerald t letters policy The Emerald will attempt to print all letters containing fair comment on topics of interest to the University community. Letters to the editor must be limited to 250 words, typed, signed and the identifica tion of the writer must be verified when the letter is turned in. The Emerald seems proud of the fact that they’re one of the largest daily newspapers in the state of Oregon (and one of the few to endorse Walter Mon dale), but I certainly hope it’s not their intent to make Gover nor Atiyeh look stupid just because he’s a Republican. Eric Stillwell Political Science Best around I would like to take this op portunity to praise the Oregon Daily Emerald for its fairness and accuracy in reporting, and accessability to students. I would also like to thank the Emerald for allowing my guest commentary on pornography to be printed (ODE, Jan. 14) and running a prompt correction on the Michigan Police Study error that appeared (it was 43 per cent, not 43 out of 35,000 sex crimes in which pornography was found to be a major factor involved). I may disagree with most of the Emerald’s editorials, but during the election and after wards, the Emerald covered events for both conservative and liberal groups fairly. The Emerald has proven itself to be the best, and fairest, of any of the other student publications on campus. Keep up the good work. Michael Cross History/Political Science Welcome back I like the welcome back I get on campus during registration. The financial aid office is an ex hilerating experience. You know they give out little numbers like my mom used to get at Nordstroms when she’d take our family to get shoes each school year. Kinda cool, but where’s the shoes? At one point, 1 felt nearly rob bed in Mac Court. I mean everything went so smooth. Registration is the one time per term that 1 have every right in the world to get pissed off. Didn’t happen this term. I’m suspect of what may happen spring term. Who knows? Maybe, as ancient rumor has suggested, registration will finally be turned over to modern computer techno-drive. God save us. “Save”: Now there’s a word. Do you realize how much money a student can “save” if he uses all the coupons and pro motions that end up in his pockets after passing Mac Court during registration? I have absolutely no idea how they got there, but my pockets were stuffed with coupons, and my car windshield was a beautiful collage of promotions from local merchants. Cool. But I got my calculator out. . . 1 figured that if I spent $532.27, I could save $48. Forty-eight bucks. That’s almost fifty smackers I could save. I’m a student: I need to save money. All’s I gotta do is sacrifice my tuition and I can save fifty bucks. Hey, I’m there. I’m gonna be doin’ a lotta pizza and film processing, but I’ll be savin’ money. Cool?. . .COOL.
