Jazz concert will feature music of Ellington, Bolling Jazz pianist Edward Kammerer will present a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, in Beall Concert Hall as part of the University music school’s Faculty Artist Series. The concert also features violinist Sharron Smith, and the two will be assisted by Ben Musa, bass, and Barry Leaman, percussion. The program includes pieces by Duke Ellington and Jimmy Van Heusen; Claude Bolling’s “Suite for Violin and Jazz Piano”; jazz variations on two country-western songs, “Red River Valley” and “San Antonio Rose”; and Kammerer's own “Songs for Acoustic Piano and Synthesizers.” A member of the University Faculty Brass and Woodwind quintets, Kam merer is also the director of the Universi ty Brass Choir. As a hornist, he has been a member of the National Orchestra of New York, The Metropolitan Opera Touring Orchestra, Westchester Philharmonic Symphony, U.S. Army Band of West Point and the Eugene Symphony. As a jazz pianist, he has appeared with groups throughout the United States. Kammerer has served as a back-up musician for such performers as Bob Hope, Donna Summers and Andy Williams, and also appeared with jazz artists such as Don Ellis, Bobby Shaw and Doc Severinsen. In addition, he was named Oregon Musician Laureate by Gov. Vic Atiyeh in 1983. Smith is a member of the Oregon Mozart Players and the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and was a former associate concertmaster of the Eugene Symphony. As a professional violinist she has given many concerts around the Pacific Northwest. She holds bachelor and master of music degrees from the University’s music school and has assisted in many faculty programs. As an active violin teacher, she has given string workshops and adjudicated competitions throughout Oregon. Photo show opens at museum Works by three contemporary American photographers, Diane Ar bus. Lisette Model and Arthur Fellig (better known as Weegee), will be on display through January 31 at the University art museum. Arbus, originally a fashion photographer, was greatly influenced by Model, her teacher, and by Weegee, a newspaper photographer whose use of flash created stark con trasts with the main subjects sur rounded in shadow. Arbus' photography drew the atten tion of thousands of viewers shortly before her death in 1971. Her serious personal work, begun in the 1950s, portrays a compassionate concern for people on the edge of “normal” society. Model began her career in the 1940s as a free-lance photographer for “Harper's Bazaar.” During that time, she mingled with such major American photographers as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Paul Strand. Weegee, whose book “The Naked City” was the basis for a major motion picture and a popular television series, was an intrepid news photographer. He had a habit of arriv ing so quickly at the scenes of murders that it was once jokingly sug gested that he actually planned the killings. Sleeping in his car, where he had a police radio as well as a makeshift darkroom in his trunk, he could pick up police calls, rush to the scene of crimes, photograph and develop pic tures and rush prints to newspapers well ahead of other photographers. He earned the nickname Weegee for his uncanny ability to always be a step ahead of the police as though he were using a Ouija board. The art museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday except holidays. Guided tours are available on Sunday at 2 p.m. et al. VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY TRAINERS ARE NEEDED by the Support and Educa tion for Families Project (SAEF) at the Oregon Research Institute to accompany severely handicapped individuals to com munity recreation events. Volunteers must be 16 years or older and must commit to the program for nine mon ths. Mileage to activities and any costs will be paid. Social activities and training will be provided for all volunteers. SAEF is a program designed to integrate severely handicapped students into com munity activities by assisting their families.
