Restaurant CHINA BLUE Program draws potential architects By Patricia Akiyama Ol Itw EimrtW Eleven students are getting a taste of life as a University architecture major by atten ding the University’s Summer Architecture Academy. The six week program, sponsored by the architecture department, involves studio work, lectures and workshops for six hours a day, Monday through Thursday, with an ad ditional three hours of studio work Friday mornings. But students don’t have to spend all their time in the studio — unlike some ar chitecture majors during the academic year. After Chris Baines calmed his initial nervousness, he relaxed and eased into the pro gram. “I thought it would be a crammed course and we’d have to study, study," he says. Even without previous ar chitecture classes, Baines has always been interested in the field. “People thought I was weird because I was always reading books on architecture in the library,” he says. The program is designed to allow students like Baines to decide if they are interested in a career in architecture or not. "The academy gives hands on experience, so that at the end of the six weeks, they’ll know whether or not they want to go to architecture school,” says Michael Utsey, architec ture professor and academy director. To introduce students to other areas of design, pro fessors will lead students on two field trips. The first is a three day tour led by Eugene Bressle, an architecture pro fessor. Beginning at Mt. Bachelor and ending at the Oregon Dunes, Bressler will discuss the social and political issues of land plann ing policy, and the factors in volved in each environment. The second trip will be to Portland, giving students an opportunity to see urban design projects and visit several different working at mospheres, including firms ranging from two-person of fices to firms of more than 250 employees. Completing the summer academy is a final open-to-the public review of the students' work in Lawrence Hall, as well as an awards luncheon where certificates of achievement will be presented. “It’s different than I ex pected," says Janice Molly, one of two students from Eugene. She did not expect to become acquainted individual ly with each one of the students, four of whom are from outside the U.S. “We’ve only been here a week and I already feel like I’ve known everyone for a long time,” Molly says. She adds that she wants to be an ar chitect, so the academy is a chance to be in an architec ture school, and "see what it’s like."
