Biology students awarded $1000, $500 scholarships Two University biology students have been awarded Ralph and Geraldine Huestis scholarships, and another has received the Mary Alden Scholarship from the biology department. Mariana Max and Noriko Morgan will each receive Huestis grants of $1,000 for personal expenses while doing biological research. Douglas Koekkoek, an undergraduate, will receive the $500 Alden Scholarship for personal expenses while doing research this fall. The Huestis scholarships were established by family and friends as a memorial to Ralph Huestis, who was a zoology professor at the University from 1924 to 1962, and to his wife Geraldine. They are for biology majors who have demonstrated academic ability and financial need. Max, who has begun working on her doctoral degree, is tracing nerve ter minals in African cichlid fish for research underway in Russell Fernald’s neuroscience lab this summer. Morgan is an undergraduate doing research on silkworm genes in Karen Sprague’s molecular biology lab. The Alden scholarship honors the memory of Mary Alden, a 1931 University graduate.
