Hot field scheduled for Pre Classic With a handful of world record holders in the fold, this year’s Prefontaine Track and Field Classic tomor row at Hayward Field promises to produce one exciting event after another. Alberto Salazar, Eammon Coghlan, Tom Byers, Sydney Maree, Steve Scott and Mary Decker are just a few of the names which make up an outstanding lineup for the Pre meet. There appears to be not just one main feature event, but seven or perhaps eight feature events. Of the world record holders in the field, the hottest is javelin thrower Tom Petranoff. Petranoff set the new world mark with a toss of 327-2 at the Pepsi Invitational a couple of weeks ago in Los Angeles. Petranoff will be challenged in the javelin by Bob Roggy, who has tossed the spear 314-4. The 5,000 will have a couple of familiar faces. Former Oregon runner Bill McChesney, who has clock ed a 13:14.80 and current Duck runner, Jim Hill, who is redshirting this season. Hill has a best in the 5,000 of 13:30.52. The favorites, though, will have to be Craig Virgin, who has run a 13:19.2. and Irishman Coghlan, who has a best of 13:19.13 under his belt. Coghlan has also dipped under 3:50 in the indoor mile this past winter. Steve Scott, one of the United States’ premiere milers, will take a step down this weekend and run in the 800. But Scott, who has run a 1:45.05, will be challenged by Sammy Koskei, who has logged a 1:44.93 in the 800. The steeplechase should also prove to be exciting with Kelly Jensen of the Oregon Track Club who holds the world’s best this year in 8:22.9. But the field also in cludes Henry Marsh, the country’s finest steeplchaser the last two years, Doug Brown, a two-time Olympian and Graeme Fell of Great Britain. The women’s 3,000 may also produce a fast time. Decker, who has a best of 8:29.71 in the 3,000, really does not have anyone to push her. The quickest time after Decker comes from Debbie Scott of Canada who has a 8:48.85. Francie Larrieu Smith, whose best is 8:51.03 may also be in the hunt. The 10,000, the meet’s final event, will feature a dual between Salazer, Henry Rono and Mexicans Jose and Rodolfo Gomez. Rono holds the field’s fastest time at 27:22.5 while Salazar’s best is just three seconds behind. Jose Gomez has clocked a 28:06 and Rodolfo has gone 28:08. The mile, which has been the meet’s highlight oc casionally, has no runner slower than 3:56.27 in the fold. Maree, has the fastest time at 3:48.83 and Mike Boit own the second fastest time at 349.45. But the spotlight could be on Byers, whose best is 3:50.84. The meet will begin at 5:10 with the hammer and will finish at 7:15 with the running of the 10,000. et al. I.
