Business group files suit against SOSC A $20 million suit was filed Friday against Southern Oregon State College by a group of Ashland business people over the tax-exempt college's refusal to stop housing tourists and other non-students involved in activities at the school The main problem is the Oregon Shakespearean Fes tival, which attracts hundreds of people to the town of Ashland. They come primarily in the summer to see the repertory of plays presented by the festival. The college often houses charter groups during the sum mer months when the residence halls are not filled with students. The 15 business people sued SOSC in circuit court in Salem, where attorney Doug Vande Griend said he also would seek a preliminary injunction to bar the college from providing rooms, food and other services to non-students Spokesman Leo Jansen, owner of the White Motel in Ashland, said the suit came after negotiations with college officials broke down The busi ness people claim the school competes with them unfairly because it is tax-exempt Marythea Grebner. a spokes woman for the college, said of ficials had not yet seen the suit. "We feel that what we've done has been helpful to the community by bringing in groups that would not be com ing here otherwise." Grebner says Earlier in the week, an infor mal opinion by the state attor ney general's office said that housing summer groups in re sidence halls does not jeopar dize the college's tax exempt status Ashland has been the site of the annual Shakespearean fes tival. which runs from February to October, for almost 50 years It is this southern Oregon town's biggest industry The Oregon Shakespearean Festival is a nonprofit group that is not affiliated with SOSC Court convicts man of fall rape of student Philip Wade McClure was convicted in Lane County Cir cuit Court Friday of kidnapping, raping, sodomizing and robbing a 19-year-old University student last fall.
