Photo by Bob Baker These new Apple II computers should help to ease the long lines of students waiting to use terminals Computer center nets shiny Apples A reorganization in the computing center and the installation ot 19 new Apple II micro-computers may help to ease the overcrowding that caused problems in past years The computing center, which previously operated as Contract in Academic Pro gramming, has split into two separate divisions The Academic and Re search Computing division will deal mainly with student and teaching concerns, while the General Applica tions Programming division will aim primarily at adminis trative and special purpose work According to ARC member Rich Haller, the new pro grams will make the center much more efficient "The main focus of ARC is on helping the students and teachers understand how to use the computers," says Cash For Textbooks Mon.- Fri. From Campus 345-1651 Haller With the change, we’ve freed up time that previously had to be spent on non-academic concerns " The 19 new computers more than double the number of terminals availa ble Hour-long waits were not uncommon in the past, but with the installation of the new computers, the problem should be alleviated, Haller says But while the center has become more efficient, it remains extremely under staffed, said Haller. The en tire staff consists of only nine people and several student workers Haller cited funding prob lems the reason for cutbacks on staff and center hours. “ We don’t have the staff or the money to keep open any longer than we do," Haller says “It’s ridiculous how lit tle time we have " X.
