Police nab robbers Eugene Police arrested 26-year-old James Charles Car michael last Tuesday and 17-year-old Dane Le Wheeler Wednesday for a number of area robberies, including the Nov 19 hold-up of Miller's Grocery, 1026 E 20th Ave Carmichael, who was released from the Oregon State Penitentiary a month ago, was arraigned Friday in district court on two charges of first-degree robbery. Police also have charged Carmichael with parole violation and theft, says Sgt Mike Cline of the Eugene Police Department The charges involve the hold ups of the Oregon Electric Sta tion restaurant on Oct. 25 and Miller's Grocery, which is locat ed in the south University area, on Nov 19 Police believe these incidents are the first and last of about 11 related robberies Le Wheeler is charged with the robbery of the Electric Sta tion and the theft of firearms from a Lane County residence, Cline says He is in custody at the Skipworth Juvenile Home and will be tried under state juvenile codes, according to Cline A uniformed patrol officer ar rested Carmichael after pulling him over for a traffic violation. He showed false ID that was stolen during a residential burglary, Cline says The department already had received information indicating that Carmichael and Le Wheeler, both of Eugene, were the hold-up team, he says With Carmichael's arrest, the police had enough evidence to link the two suspects and ar rested Le Wheeler the following day, he says Police still are searching for a third suspect Senate cancels next meeting The Faculty Senate meeting, originally scheduled for Wed nesday, has been canceled due to insufficient business, says Senate chairer Gerry Bogen Reviewing curriculum changes, the main item on the agenda, would not be possible because members would not have received information in time to study materials carefully before the meeting, Bogen says The Senate will review the proposed curriculum changes and any other business brought up at the Dec 8 University Assembly meeting at its next meeting on Jan 5, at 3:30 p m in Room 125, Law School Economics degree probed The value of an economics degree will be discussed today at a 2 p m seminar in EMU Room 167 Three seminar speakers will discuss economics-related jobs in government and banking, the values of different degrees, graduate courses, and admis sions criteria for the graduate program The speakers will be Tom Corrigan, director of employment and recruiting for First Interstate Bank's Oregon division; Joe Stone, economics professor and chairer of the Graduate Admissions Com mittee; and Jim Scherzinger, state economist for the Legisla tive Fiscal Office.
