Cagers open with a split By John Healy Ot the Emerald One thing is certain about this year's Oregon basketball team — it's a world away from the run-n'-gun club that wore the Oregon colors last fall. The key words now are patience and pass ing, with a very liberal dose of sticky man-to man defense All three elements were in evidence over th# Thanksgiving weekend as the Ducks wobbled to a 63-46 home win over the University of California-San Diego Friday night in their first counting game, then came back Saturday night to almost derail the Eugene stop in Athletes in Action's yearly basketball crusade The Ducks followed the same pattern in both games — tough at the start, soft in the middle portion of the game — with a slightly different twist at the end In the win over the NCAA Division III Tritons, Oregon opened a quick 18-4 lead Junior David Brantley, the 6-6 forward from Churchill, scored 10 of Oregon's first 18 points He finished the weekend with 30 points and 10 rebounds, tops for the Ducks in both categor ies A rally by Cal-San Diego cut the lead to 25-20 at the end of the first half, But some torrid outside shooting from the baseline by soph omore forward Bryan Trendall in the final stanza held off the Tritons The 55-53 loss to AlA's Canadian branch was nip-and-tuck for the entire first half The game was tied five times and the lead changed hands six times After Oregon opened the second half with a quick layup by 7-foot center Blair Rasmussen, AIA-Canada outscored Oregon 12-4 to take a 38-30 lead Marvin Delph and Ken Owens, everybody's "Why aren’t they in the NBA?" picks, keyed the drive by combining for five field goals The Ducks came back, though, riding the fiery play of backup guard Paul Bain, the only senior on this year's team Bain provided an element the Ducks seemed to lack both nights Photo by Dave Kao Oregon's David Brantley lofts a jumper in Friday's Duck win over Cal-San Diego at Mac Court Brantley led the Ducks with 30 points as they split a pair of weekend contests — creativity — as he popped in tour field goals and four free throws in the last 10:44 of the second half But fittingly. Owens and Delph — who proved they had a soft touch at the line after leaving no doubt about their one-on-one skills — each hit both ends on one-and-ones from the line to ice the AIA win It was their second win in the state in the last week after a 62-60 victory in Corvallis over Oregon State Women get first victory After a cold start on their sea son-opening trip to the midwest, the Oregon women's basketball team finally heated up enough to break into the win column Saturday with a 74-64 victory over DePaul The win came in the consola tion game of the Dial Classic at Minneapolis. Minn The Ducks dropped their first game of the tournament 71-65 to Memphis State Friday night But the biggest loss of the trip may have come Saturday when freshman guard Laurie Tennant injured her ankle The 5-10 guard from Gresham's Sam Barlow High School is the Ducks' second leading scorer through four games averaging 118 points per game. The ex tent of her injury won't be known until Monday, but she could be sidelined for up to three weeks. Center Alison Lang matched her team-leading 23 point aver age to pace the Ducks against DePaul Lang, who also tops Duck rebounders with an aver age of 10 5 per game, pulled down 14 on Saturday Lang got scoring help trom forward Chris Metzger, who tallied 18 points Before injuring her ankle, Tennant, who has 19 assists and 16 steals on the season, came up with six steals in 19 minutes of action Friday, Lang collected 25 points and Tennant added 15, but it wasn't enough to over come a 10 point Tiger run which erased a five point Oregon second half lead. The Ducks, who opened the season with losses at Drake and Illinois State, are now 1-3 TELEFUND STATISTICS 100.000 90 000 00.000 70.000 60.000 50.000 40.000 30.000 20.000 10.000 On 11/18 inter-varsity Christian Fellowship received a total of 90 pledges for a total of $1,425 That brings the grand total for the telefund to $29,280 The most pledges for one night was achieved by Alpha Phi Omega and Circle K Club with 162 pledges. Backs lead in Heisman race NEW YORK (AP) - The Heis man Trophy, symbol of college football excellence, will be awarded next Saturday with Herschel Walker or John Elway likely to make the winner a back for the 46th time in 48 years Walker, the Georgia running back who was third as a fresh man two years ago and second last year, is favored to advance the final step this year If anyone can keep him from it, it's probably Elway, the Stan ford quarterback who's broken most of the passing records at a school that's turned out pla toons of great signal callers Besides Walker and Elway, other contenders include run ning back Eric Dickerson of Southern Methodist, quarter backs Dan Marino of Pitt and Todd Blackledge of Penn State and flanker Anthony Carter of Michigan The sleeper is center David Rimington of Nebraska, named for the second year in a row the winner of the Outland Trophy as the nation's best lineman But Rimington is in an almost impossible spot Only two line men have won the Heisman and both were ends who also played defense — Larry Kelley of Yale in 1936 and Leon Hart of Notre Dame in 1949 In recent years, only Hugh Green of Pitt, a defensive end with a penchant for eye-catch ing plays, came close He was second to running back George Rogers of South Carolina in 1980 German AUTO BtRVICm VWs-MERCEDES-BMWs DATSUN-TOYOTA-AUDi Reliable service for your foreign car 342-2912 2025 Franklin Blvd. Eugene, Oregon Professional Ski 'J’uning BASE REPAIR EDGE SHARPENING CUSTOM WAXING IRON HOT WAX by Certified Ski Technician Call JON 345-1539 Students Only!
