Balfe The faculty-elected council has existed for a long time. Hill said in reaction to Balfe’s comments published in Tuesday's Emerald University Pres Paul Olum takes ideas to the committee to get a faculty perspective, Hill said The committee also serves as a communicating device between the president and the faculty, he added Balfe's suggestion for creating a student advisory council is a feasible idea, Hill said The council is being formed so Olum may ask students to advise him on issues pertinent to students, Balfe said Tuesday The council is not in opposition to the administration and facul ty, he said The ASUO hopes to have a student representative on the faculty committee, but until that time the council will serve the purpose, Balfe said. The ASUO does not want a vote on the committee, "but a voice in what happens,” he added The remarks made in the article "are not a good representation of how we have tried to work with them this year,” Balfe said. The ASUO doesn't "want to go head-to-head with anyone," but wants to work with the faculty and administration, he said The statement about protect ing student organizations' au tonomy was not "paranoia about the administration taking over," but concerned strengthening student auton omy, Balfe added. The ASUO and Student University Affairs Board are not wary of the faculty but want to assure student represen tatives vote responsibly so they are not accused of coalition or irresponsible voting, he said Students to fill a variety of advisory committees Forty-four students have been appointed to positions on University student/faculty com mittees by the student Com mittee on Committees and con firmed by University Pres Paul Olum Olum appointed the following students to the following com mittees: Lori Kleinsmith, James Gil baugh, Michael Wilson — academic standards; Patrick Widmer — admissions policy; Hilary Gerdes, Christine LaCasse — advising; Jeffrey Stuhr — campus planning; JoZell Johnson — curriculum; Deborah Romerein, David Lesser — University faculty personnel; Katherine Yorke, Ann Croman — foreign study programs; Craig Taylor — graduate council; Tom Danowski, Dale Penegor, Robert Waldron — intercolle giate athletics; David Steinmetz, Steve Gehlen — library; Elizabeth Halimah, April Brown, Patricia Akiyama, Terry Russell — minority education council; Lorianne Shaft, Gina Marie Crowe — museum of art advi sory; Leslie Drate — safety advi sory; Daniel Cohen, Jennifer Elling — scholarships; Richard Stewart, Cheryl Royston, Misha Levitan-Keith, Kelly Spoh'n — scholastic review; Colleen Chinen, Cynthia Briggs — status of women; Pat Maginnis, Michael Cornell, Tamae Moriya su — student financial aid; David McKay, Rebecca Ricoy — student health services; Mark Woloshin — teacher education; Mona Buckley, Cliff Baker, Lori Lieberman — grievances; and Mike Annis, Lyn Thompson — traffic appeals Further appointments will be announced at a later date.
