Faculty advisory group
not clandestine, says Hill
The faculty advisory council
does not meet secretly, Univer
sity vice provost Richard Hill
said Tuesday in reference to
remarks made Monday by
ASUO Pres C.J. Balfe
The faculty-elected council
has existed for a long time. Hill
said in reaction to Balfe’s
comments published in
Tuesday's Emerald
University Pres Paul Olum
takes ideas to the committee to
get a faculty perspective, Hill
said
The committee also serves as
a communicating device
between the president and the
faculty, he added
Balfe's suggestion for
creating a student advisory
council is a feasible idea, Hill
said
The council is being formed
so Olum may ask students to
advise him on issues pertinent
to students, Balfe said Tuesday
The council is not in opposition
to the administration and facul
ty, he said
The ASUO hopes to have a
student representative on the
faculty committee, but until that
time the council will serve the
purpose, Balfe said. The ASUO
does not want a vote on the
committee, "but a voice in what
happens,” he added
The remarks made in the
article "are not a good
representation of how we have
tried to work with them this
year,” Balfe said.
The ASUO doesn't "want to
go head-to-head with anyone,"
but wants to work with the
faculty and administration, he
said
The statement about protect
ing student organizations' au
tonomy was not "paranoia
about the administration taking
over," but concerned
strengthening student auton
omy, Balfe added.
The ASUO and Student
University Affairs Board are not
wary of the faculty but want to
assure student represen
tatives vote responsibly so they
are not accused of coalition or
irresponsible voting, he said
Students to fill a variety
