The three University marching band trumpeters join 450 collegiate musicians in an All-American Collegiate Marching Band performing at Walt Disney World Band members win Florida trip By Joan Herman Ot tlw EmaraM Three University musicians will soon be marching in Orlan do, Fla , as they travel to Walt Disney Worid to play in the first All American College Marching Band. Trumpeters Darine Abeene, Andy Bither and Dave Chartrey leave Sunday for an all-ex penses-paid trip to play in the band The three trumpeters will be among 450 collegiate musicians nationwide participating in the grand opening of the Exper imental Prototype Community World in Walt Disney World The band will represent the United States on Oct. 23 in an international music festival, with 23 nations taking part in the opening of World Showcase The West Point Glee Club and various celebrities will join the band and international groups the following day for dedication ceremonies scheduled to take place in Future World The band will also take part in opening festivities, which will be aired in a one-hour television special on the CBS television network Oct 25 The students' busy schedule begins Oct 17, when they arrive for a week of rehearsals in preparation for the opening ceremonies "The first week we arrive we ll be playing all day long, learning new songs and routines," says Bither, a senior in music educa tion Bither says he, Abeene and Chartrey were given an applica tion to apply for the band by former marching band director Gerald Poe. who is now teach ing at the University of Florida "I didn't think I had a chance but I sent my application in any way and I was chosen," says Bither, who has been in march ing bands since he was 12 years old Each school was given four applications, and only three were submitted by the Universi ty "I think we did very well as a school," Bither says Chartrey, a music educa tion/performance major active in the University marching band for the past three years, says leadership ability and exper ience, as well as talent, played a part in the selections. "I was probably chosen because he (Poe) knew of my leadership abilities,” says Char trey, the marching band's field instructor this year Like Bither and Chartrey, who were trumpet students of Poe s, Abeene also took lessons from Poe for seven years "It'll be a great experience being able to play in this band These guys are the best in the country,' says Abeene, a music education performance major Although their week will be filled with official duties, the three traveling musicians hope to find time for a quick visit to Disney World "I can hardly wait," Bithe says.
