Three University musicians
will soon be marching in Orlan
do, Fla , as they travel to Walt
Disney Worid to play in the first
All American College Marching
Band.
Trumpeters Darine Abeene,
Andy Bither and Dave Chartrey
leave Sunday for an all-ex
penses-paid trip to play in the
band
The three trumpeters will be
among 450 collegiate musicians
nationwide participating in the
grand opening of the Exper
imental Prototype Community
World in Walt Disney World
The band will represent the
United States on Oct. 23 in an
international music festival, with
23 nations taking part in the
opening of World Showcase
The West Point Glee Club and
various celebrities will join the
band and international groups
the following day for dedication
ceremonies scheduled to take
place in Future World
The band will also take part in
opening festivities, which will be
aired in a one-hour television
special on the CBS television
network Oct 25
The students' busy schedule
begins Oct 17, when they arrive
for a week of rehearsals in
preparation for the opening
ceremonies
"The first week we arrive we ll
be playing all day long, learning
new songs and routines," says
Bither, a senior in music educa
tion
Bither says he, Abeene and
Chartrey were given an applica
tion to apply for the band by
former marching band director
Gerald Poe. who is now teach
ing at the University of Florida
"I didn't think I had a chance
but I sent my application in any
way and I was chosen," says
Bither, who has been in march
ing bands since he was 12 years
old
Each school was given four
applications, and only three
were submitted by the Universi
ty
"I think we did very well as a
school," Bither says
Chartrey, a music educa
tion/performance major active
in the University marching band
for the past three years, says
leadership ability and exper
ience, as well as talent, played a
part in the selections.
"I was probably chosen
because he (Poe) knew of my
leadership abilities,” says Char
trey, the marching band's field
instructor this year
Like Bither and Chartrey, who
were trumpet students of Poe s,
Abeene also took lessons from
Poe for seven years
"It'll be a great experience
being able to play in this band
These guys are the best in the
country,' says Abeene, a music
education performance major
Although their week will be
filled with official duties, the
three traveling musicians hope
to find time for a quick visit to
Disney World
"I can hardly wait," Bithe
says.
