Power Continued from Page 4B Just to get a phone to call mom, you may have to mail her a "send money" letter An $80 deposit is required to open a new phone account, and it may be even more if a previous account shows poor credit Pacific Northwest Bell needs to know the new address to see if phone jacks are there If they are, the phone can simply be plugged in, but there is a $27 charge to reconnect the line This process may take one or two business days, or up to a week if co-signers are needed Installation of a phone jack costs extra, beginning with $25 for the first 15 minutes of work If the phone line has not yet been disconnected, as some times happens when another roommate moves into an already occupied residence, the billing name may be changed for $15. There are now many ways to choose a phone A phone may be rented from Pacific Northwest Bell, or pur chased from a variety of com panies, including Bell Phones rent for a few aoiiars per month, plus a $4 initial charge Although the price of a new phone can range from $39 95 to $400 or more, depending on style and features, they can offer a savings over renting a phone for several years. Various monthly charge rates are available, depending on how much the phone will be used With little effort, you may not get the most important reading material for getting through col lege — letters from home Mail may not be delivered to an apartment if the person's name is not on the mailbox of the apartment it is addressed to This is to prevent mail delivery for someone who has already moved out Names are less important for other residences, but helpful. Change of address cards should be filled out to have mail forwarded directly to a new ad dress by the post office in the former hometown A cold, rainy morning is not the best time to find out there is no more heating oil for the stove or furnace Use a stick or tape measure to check the oil depth in the tank, and tell the oil company which regularly services it how many inches were found They will usually know what size it is, and be able to tell how many gallons are left in the tank The Automatic Heat Com pany, one of several heating oil companies in the area, can sometimes deliver the oil the same day if it is called in early, according to Jan Kraal, book keeper Students usually pay cash on delivery with Automatic Heat, since it is difficult to establish credit in only a few months, Kraal says If the furnace or stove is not starting even though there is oil in it, there is probably air in the line If there is a reset button, hit it: otherwise call the oil company about how to open a valve and let the air out Kraal says oil prices are usually variable throughout the year, but the Automatic Heat Company s prices have stayed the same since April They charge $1 31 per 9 gal lons for 100 or fewer gallons of furnace oil. and $1 40 if it is stove oil The cost per gallon is less when more is purchased Kraal says a general rule of thumb for oil use is about 3 gallons per day An efficient furnace is the best conserver of oil. although house insulation is also impor tant, she notes There Is a semblance of an "unwritten law" governing gar bage service in the Eugene area, with companies generally staying in their own territory Either your landlord or an other garbage company should know which one serves a par ticular residence A-1 Garbage Service serves much of the University area Garbage pickup is usually in cluded in apartment rent, but others should call the appro priate company to begin service and set up an account Eugene pickup rates are set by the Eugene City Council, at $6 for one can per week, or $10 05 for two cans Pickup only once or twice a month may also be a possibility Many companies provide a recycling service at no charge when the material is left at the curb Generally, jars should be clean and lidded, newspapers and cardboard bundled, and cans clean, labelless and flat These criteria also apply to the University BRING recycling drop site near the Food-op. but cardboard is not taken while aluminum and scrap metal are Cable TV is available in the Eugene-Springfield area from Group W Cable, which is fea turing a one-half price sale on beginning or adding cable ser vice through Oct 4 Group W regularly charges $20 to initiate cable service, and $15 to expand it A variety of cable services are available, including Basic.
