Just to get a phone to call
mom, you may have to mail her a
"send money" letter
An $80 deposit is required to
open a new phone account, and
it may be even more if a previous
account shows poor credit
Pacific Northwest Bell needs
to know the new address to see
if phone jacks are there
If they are, the phone can
simply be plugged in, but there
is a $27 charge to reconnect the
line
This process may take one or
two business days, or up to a
week if co-signers are needed
Installation of a phone jack
costs extra, beginning with $25
for the first 15 minutes of work
If the phone line has not yet
been disconnected, as some
times happens when another
roommate moves into an
already occupied residence, the
billing name may be changed
for $15.
There are now many ways to
choose a phone
A phone may be rented from
Pacific Northwest Bell, or pur
chased from a variety of com
panies, including Bell
Phones rent for a few aoiiars
per month, plus a $4 initial
charge
Although the price of a new
phone can range from $39 95 to
$400 or more, depending on
style and features, they can
offer a savings over renting a
phone for several years.
Various monthly charge rates
are available, depending on
how much the phone will be
used
With little effort, you may not
get the most important reading
material for getting through col
lege — letters from home
Mail may not be delivered to
an apartment if the person's
name is not on the mailbox of
the apartment it is addressed to
This is to prevent mail delivery
for someone who has already
moved out
Names are less important for
other residences, but helpful.
Change of address cards
should be filled out to have mail
forwarded directly to a new ad
dress by the post office in the
former hometown
A cold, rainy morning is not
the best time to find out there is
no more heating oil for the stove
or furnace
Use a stick or tape measure to
check the oil depth in the tank,
and tell the oil company which
regularly services it how many
inches were found
They will usually know what
size it is, and be able to tell how
many gallons are left in the tank
The Automatic Heat Com
pany, one of several heating oil
companies in the area, can
sometimes deliver the oil the
same day if it is called in early,
according to Jan Kraal, book
keeper
Students usually pay cash on
delivery with Automatic Heat,
since it is difficult to establish
credit in only a few months,
Kraal says
If the furnace or stove is not
starting even though there is oil
in it, there is probably air in the
line
If there is a reset button, hit it:
otherwise call the oil company
about how to open a valve and
let the air out
Kraal says oil prices are
usually variable throughout the
year, but the Automatic Heat
Company s prices have stayed
the same since April
They charge $1 31 per 9 gal
lons for 100 or fewer gallons of
furnace oil. and $1 40 if it is
stove oil
The cost per gallon is less
when more is purchased
Kraal says a general rule of
thumb for oil use is about 3
gallons per day
An efficient furnace is the
best conserver of oil. although
house insulation is also impor
tant, she notes
There Is a semblance of an
"unwritten law" governing gar
bage service in the Eugene
area, with companies generally
staying in their own territory
Either your landlord or an
other garbage company should
know which one serves a par
ticular residence
A-1 Garbage Service serves
much of the University area
Garbage pickup is usually in
cluded in apartment rent, but
others should call the appro
priate company to begin service
and set up an account
Eugene pickup rates are set
by the Eugene City Council, at
$6 for one can per week, or
$10 05 for two cans
Pickup only once or twice a
month may also be a possibility
Many companies provide a
recycling service at no charge
when the material is left at the
curb
Generally, jars should be
clean and lidded, newspapers
and cardboard bundled, and
cans clean, labelless and flat
These criteria also apply to
the University BRING recycling
drop site near the Food-op. but
cardboard is not taken while
aluminum and scrap metal are
Cable TV is available in the
Eugene-Springfield area from
Group W Cable, which is fea
turing a one-half price sale on
beginning or adding cable ser
vice through Oct 4
Group W regularly charges
$20 to initiate cable service, and
$15 to expand it
A variety of cable services are
available, including Basic.
Super, Cable Plus. Showtime
and Home Box Office
Basic is $7 95 per month, with
additional charges tor added
services up to $32 85 per month
for a package which includes all
five services on 23 channels
