nine starters from '81 Safety Richardson (6-0, 190) and
linebacker Maxwell (6-2. 225) have been tabbed by
Street and Smith's football preview as first team All
Americans.
Starters Jim Jeffcoat (6-6, 255), Mike Langston
(6-4, 250) and Walt Bowyer (6-4, 231) return in the
defensive line The secondary, led by Richardson, who
tied for the conference lead in interceptions with six in
'81, returns all four starters They limited opposing
passers to a 46 6 percent completion rate in '81, lowest
in the Pac-10
The offensive backfield will include senior Willie
Gittens (5-10,178), who gained 374 yards last season at
tailback but underwent shoulder surgery in the spring;
junior Dwaine Wright (6-0, 235), a starter two years ago.
at fullback; and junior Todd Hons (6-1, 183) at quarter
back.
The Sun Devil's schedule is a plus this year as they
face only two top Pac-10 teams, USC and Washington,
and they get both of them at home
Don't look for Arizona State on the tube this year,
courtesy of the NCAA, but when early December rolls
around, look for them to receive a bowl bid
The Bruins never seem to enjoy quite the success
that their crosstown rivals, the Trojans, do But on the
other hand, one man's poverty is another man s wealth
Most Pac-10 teams would relish the Bruin's win
ning tradition, which includes four bowl games in the
last seven years and winning seasons 11 of the last 13
The Bruins were especially hot late last year,
destroying Rose Bowl bound Washington 31-0 and 9-2
Arizona State 34-24 before losing to USC 22-21, a loss
that denied them a trip to the Rose Bowl
They should be even hotter this season, according
to head coach Terry Donahue, who says says his team
will go into the fall 'in the best shape physically that I
can remember in many years.”
The Bruins ended up third in the conference in
points allowed (14 9) after leading the Pac-10 through
the first six weeks by giving up only 67 points The
majority of that defense returns, with seven starters
back including second team AII-Pac-10 linemen Karl
Morgan (6-1,251) and Irv Eatman (6-6’*, 263) The pair
of seniors combined for 11 quarterback sacks and 15
tackles for losses in 81
The Bruin secondary, third in the conference last
fall, returns almost intact Senior strong safety Tom
Sullivan (5-10, 189) tied for the Pac-10 lead in inter
ceptions with six, and he also had 109 total tackles. The
second-team AII-Pac-10 performer will be joined at
safety by the less publicized Don Rogers (6-1,204). who
led the Bruins with 133 total tackles last fall
Lupe Sanchez (5-9’^, 187), second team AII-Pac-10
in '80. sat out last year with a broken arm, but he will be
back at cornerback this fall
UCLA's defense will get a lot of help on the scor
eboard from the Bruin's offense, which averaged 26 2
points per game last year Surprisingly, the Bruin's
well-respected veer offense ranked higher in the con
ference in passing than running
Senior Tom Ramsay (6-1. 190) threw for 1,793
yards and 16 TD s in 81 His main targets were
AII-Pac-10 split end Cormac Carney (6-0, 200), who
snagged 29 passes for 539 yards, and flanker Jojo
Townsell (5-8, 180). who caught 26 for 430 yards
The Bruin's won t be weak at running back, not with
junior tailback Kevin Nelson (5-10, 191), second team
AII-Pac-10 in '81 He gained 883 yards, playing in only
six complete games because of a variety of injuries.
Senior fullback Frank Bruno (5-11. 233) added 269
yards
If there is a gray cloud on the Bruin's horizon, it
could be the fact that Ron Mahlstedt (6-3Vi, 251) is the
only returnee in the offensive line who started more
than six games last year
But it should be a pretty sunny fall for UCLA The
wire services have picked the Bruins as high as 17th
nationally, and best of all USC is ineligible for the Rose
Bowl

It was late November in Seattle, and the Cougars
were knocking — no. more like pounding — on the door
of the Rose Bowl These were the same Cougars who
came from a long line of non-winning tradition, a
tradition that had yielded a meager four winning sea
sons in their last 21 campaigns, not a bowl game since a
24-0 loss to Alabama in the 1931 Rose Bowl
The Cougars held even with the Huskies for three
quarters last November before succumbing 23-10, but
they went on to post-season Holiday Bowl and finished
the year at 8-3-1
Washington State was equally good on both sides
of the field, finishing third in both offense and defense in
the conference Much of the offensive credit went to a
pair of quarterbacks with completely different styles,
junior Ricky Turner (5-10, 161) and senior Clete Casper
(6-3, 192), who alternated at quarterback
The two fit the classic stereotypes: Casper, the
rangey dropback passer, who passes for 1,008 yards
while splitting time with jitterbug Turner, who gained
523 yards rushing
"I think we ll know one thing, ” says head coach Jim
Walden of this year 'We'll know if we have one great
quarterback or if we have two great quarterbacks. I
think we have two.”
The rest of the backfield is just as solid. Senior
tailback Tim Harris (5-8, 182) gained 915 yards last year
and was second team AII-Pac-10, while senior fullback
Robert Williams (5-10, 184) gained 445 yards and
scored five touchdowns.
