Just like a lot of this season's Pac-10 defenses, probably not The defense will be too worried about the Trojan's offensive line The Trojans return four of five starting offensive linemen, the only loss being guard Roy Foster to the NFL Actually, the Trojans have five starters returning, since senior Kelly Thomas (6-6, 270) and Darryl Moore (6-6, 270) split time starting at the strongside tackle spot last fall. The tailback that will follow these behemoths will be either sophomore Fred Crutcher (5-10, 195), junior Michael Harper (5-11, 195) or sophomore Zep Lee (6-2’/2, 204). Crutcher (268 yards, 7 4 avg in '81) and Harper (who redshirted last fall after gaining 274 yards in '80) backed up Marcus Allen the last two years, while Lee 8.1 averaged yards per attempt as last year's third-string tailback. The fullback and quarterback positions are a bit more solidified, with junior Todd Spencer (5-11 Vi, 195), who gained 377 yards in ’81, returning as the starter at fullback, and sophomore Sean Salisbury (6-5Vi, 210) taking over the starting quarterback position from John Mazur, who transferred to Texas AM after losing the job to Salisbury in the spring Salisbury, who had 15 pass attempts last fall, will be throwing to returning senior split ends Jeff Simmons (6-3, 195), who caught 28 passes for 543 yards in ’81, and Malcolm Moore (6-5, 205), who caught 15 for 230 yards The Pac-10's best defense last year returns seven starters Senior noseguard George Achica (6-5, 255), a second team All-American in '81, anchors a defense that allowed only 285.3 yards per game last fall Second team AII-Pac-10 cornerback Joey Browner (6-3, 205), who had 74 tackles and 16 deflections last year, will switch to safety this fall. The Trojans actually have eight starters returning, since linebacker Riki Gray, a starter in '80 and an AII-Pac-10 choice, will return after knee surgery last year. The Trojans, who haven’t had a losing season since a 4-5-1 mark in 1961, are ranked tenth nationally in the AP wire service poll. The trojans will have to be happy with wire service rankings this fall, the NCAA has banned them from bowl games, which they've been to 13 of the last 16 years. But that shouldn't slow them down, according to Robinson "We"ll have a damn good football team.” Robinson says.
