Playboy, two wire service polls — AP and UPI — and Sports Illustrated all pick Washington to finish second nationally and annex their third Pac-10 title in a row After all, Washington won the Pac-10 last year, thumped Iowa 28-0 in Rose Bowl finishing the year 10-2 while ranked seventh in the final UPI poll. Even better, the Huskies return 17 of 22 starters, including eight on offense and nine on defense But wait. This is the same team that was outgained by 1 5 yards per game last year Outgained? Yes, but ask head coach Don James if he cares Probably not, the Huskies finished second in the Pac-10 in defense last year Of even more importance is a rarely quoted statistic — the Huskies took the ball away from their opponents 12 more times last season than they gave the ball up. Those kind of turnover stats might even make a basketball coach happy The Huskies will probably keep taking the ball away from opponents, considering that their defense includes first team AII-Pac-10 corner back Ray Horton (5-11, 188), a pre-season All American, and linebacker Mark Stewart (6-3, 230), second team AII-Pac-10 in '81 and a pre season second team All-American. Stewart will be joined at linebacker by re turning starters Ken Driscoll (5-11, 213), who led the team in tackles the past two years, and Tony Caldwell (6-1 Vi, 222). The defensive line will be anchored by tack les Ray Cattage (6-3, 243), honorable mention All-Coast in '81, and Scott Garnett (6-2Vi, 253), who was sidelined with an injury for six games last year but still managed seven tackles for losses. The offense appears to be improved with the emergence of former scout team tailback Jacque Robinson (5-11, 202) in the Rose Bowl He was voted MVP after gaining 142 yards in Pasadena, and his presence at tailback gives the Huskies their first game-winning tailback since Joe Steele sliced for 1,111 yards in 1977 Junior Steve Pelleur (6-3, 201), who tallied 1,138 yards and nine touchdowns in '81, will start at quarterback Should he falter, last year's opening game starter Tim Cowan (6-OVi, 184) — who was sidelined for the year after suffering a thumb injury in the second game — is waiting in the wings to take over In limited duty last fall, he Emerald photo The Huskies will kick more than field goals in the Pac-10. Chuck Nelson, honorable mention all America in 81, is sixth on Washington's all-time scoring list. was 13 of 20 for 182 yards Pelleur — or Cowan — will throw to second team AII-Pac-10 flanker Paul Skansi (5-11 Vi, 190), who caught 24 passes for 295 yards last fall (he has 88 catches in his career), or split end Anthony Allen (5-11, 180), who led the Huskies with 29 catches for 389 yards, Allen made the first team AII-Pac-10 as a punt returner, averaging a con ference leading 11.9 yards per punt return.
