The women's cross country team is headed for a National title, page 26 head coach Tom Heinon en says, but the men may take a fall. Bad football isn't the only thing keeping Oregon out of bowl games and off television, so are NCAA sanctions, page 19. debbie howlett/better things once over lightly This Is not about eggs. This is about sports, and as scrambled as my brain can get, I think I can still mix a few cheap shots, a fair amount of serious comment and a few yolks The puns are getting lousier, so on to better things A better thing for the women's cross country team is a national title, and as outstanding as that is, it's not much better than last year's runner-up finish However, I think Tom Heinonen is right, after nationals, no one will remember Stanford or Virginia The men's cross country team is look ing for some better things Head coach Bill Dellinger says the Ducks, a perrenial powerhouse, may be in need of some help from the team's youth But I think Dellinger's predictions are as reliable as somebody else's Rose Bowl predictions A better thing for the football team will be 1983. Kevin Willhite will play (he's red shirting this year because of a shredded hamstring) and Kevin Lusk won't But you're right, I really shouldn't ' boo'' Lusk According to head coach Rich Brooks, when fans "boo'’ the players, it's really directed at him I agree. Rich, and after two scandal ridden winning seasons and one presumably clean losing season, you finally hit the nail on the head And speaking of scandals, the NCAA finally got around to deciding which of the Ducks' wrists it should slap That's old news, but what's news is that athletic director Rick Bay, is wrong to say the penalty is more than that. For USC, one year without a bowl game or a live televi sion appearance is a major penalty — for the Ducks, it's a slap on the wrist. A case In point; USC had their televi sion penalty pushed back — so the Trojans could honor a contract to appear on national television The NCAA can be very understanding A far. far better thing is the way Bay handled Fred Cofield Cofield left Oregon because he says the athletic department ignored him But that was after Fred ignored a few payments to Ma Bell If one spends eight hours on the sand dunes of Florence, a better thing than exposure is sun tan lotion The volleyball team was nice enough to agree that myself and photographer Mark Pynes could tag along on their annual trek to the coast Mark and I were amazed at the difficulty of the workout and the tenacity of the team that went through it A better thing than Florence is Eugene, and in the Emerald City, there aren't many better things than running Personally though. I’m more inclined to watch, which is what I'll probably do at the Oregon International at Hayward Field this Friday. A better thing than the Oregon International track meet, is the Oregon International with Sebastian Coe dueling Steve Ovett Unfortunately, Coe and Ovett both withdrew because of illness and injury I hope they both get better A better thing than saying no to a concert appearance by the Who at Aut zen Stadium — even if it cuts into the week of hoopla that will undoubtedly surround the Notre Dame football game — would be to do both. And I suppose, if the Notre Dame game is the "biggest” football game in Duck history, the best thing is to turn down $125,000 guaran teed by Pete Townshend's crew, but even then, I kind of doubt it.
