KWAX money woes stay By David Stienmetz Of th* Emsrsfd What do you get when you cross the University’s mascot, the duck, with a classical music radio station? KWAX, 91 1 FM, the Universi ty’s 31-year-old public radio station The station’s "information" and classical music voice may become only a peep, however, depending on the fall student headcount and funding deci sions by Pres Paul Olum Listener contributions cur rently make up 35 percent of the station's $181,000 budget, but further University funding cuts could leave half the station's support up to individuals, ac cording to General Manager Janet Kenney Federal money provides 20 percent of the station's support, while the University currently gives a 45 percent subsidy University funding is "still on hold as far as we know," Ken ney says A fall fundraiser to raise $25,000 by selling season tickets" is planned to begin Sept 29 and will run until the goal is reached Kenney ex pects this to take 8 to 10 days Although most of this year's budget is for personnel, many students working there are un paid Of the 20 students working "in all areas of the station " dur ing the summer, about nine were paid, and these were mostly announcers. Kenney says The 400 watt station's Na tional Public Radio affiliation provides a variety of programs, including the Morning Edition on weekdays and Aii Things Considered every evening. Kenney says she prefers to call such programs “informa tion" because the format is more in-depth and feature oriented than the five-minute “hard news” variety. Classical music can also be heard daily now, with five hours devoted to it Saturday evenings.
