KWAX, 91 1 FM, the Universi
ty’s 31-year-old public radio
station
The station’s "information"
and classical music voice may
become only a peep, however,
depending on the fall student
headcount and funding deci

station's $181,000 budget, but
further University funding cuts
could leave half the station's
support up to individuals, ac
cording to General Manager

Kenney says she prefers to
call such programs “informa
tion" because the format is
more in-depth and feature
oriented than the five-minute
“hard news” variety.
Classical music can also be
heard daily now, with five hours
devoted to it Saturday evenings.
A folk music program has
recently been added Friday
evenings
Another local public radio
station, KLCC at 89.7 FM. is
news and jazz oriented, and so
the two stations complement
each other, Kenney says
Eugene is one of the few
markets with two public radio
stations, and this is an important
part of the quality of life here,
she says
O-S-P-l-R-G spells issues
Group gives students research, media experience
The University chapter of the Oregon Student
Public Interest Research Group is entering its
11th year as strong and as committed as ever A
meeting for interested students is scheduled for
the third week in October
OSPIRG is a student run and student funded
organization that investigates and publishes
reports on issues of interest and concern to
students as citizens in Oregon In the past
OSPIRG has investigated consumer issues such
as tenant rights and housing, utility issues, health
care and environmental issues
The research group is run by a board of
directors elected by the student body The dlrec
tors hire professionals and workstudy students
and use student volunteers to research, write and
print publications and work with the media Oc
casionally individuals are needed to participate in
the legislative and court arenas on particular
issues
OSPIRG strives to involve as many students
as possible in as many activites as possible that
will develop and retine their citizenship skills — to
give students an opportunity to practice what
professors preach to them in the classroom
OSPIRG is staffed almost entirely by Univer
sity students All students are invited to par
ticipate in the research and writing aspects of the
group Volunteers are always needed and
students are encouraged to give their time to
OSPIRG projects
A general interest meeting is scheduled for
the third week of October The exact date and
location of the meeting will be announced later
