Pill offers diet alternative What if you could eat all the pasta you wanted and not gain any weight7 It may sound too good to be true but the recent distribution of Calorex — a diet pill recently re-classified as a non-prescrip tion drug — has received favor able response from users and suppliers The pill, also marketed under the trade name Carbolite works by preventing the digestion of starch enzymes contained in pasta corn, beans and bread, says Dorothy Shields of Ever green Nutritional Supply, which distributes 50-pill bottles of Calorex at $19 50 each — or about 40 cents a pop A user takes one pill before eating to break down the car bohydrates present in starch — "so you still get vitamins, min erals and bulk from the foods you just don't get the calories. Shields says "It helps you stay on a diet,” she says, adding that success depends on the person Dr Mark Luethy, of the Eugene Preventative Health Center, says the principle behind the pills, which die ticians have prescribed to over weight persons for approxima tely 10 years, is a sound" one He says overuse of the pills would have the same effects as a fast'' "If your body is not digesting carbohydrates (through Calor ex use) and if you cut out sugars as well, the body will start to break down body fats," Luethy says Body fat breakdown is desir able for weight loss but carried to extremes, it can result in a illness called Ketose he says Side effects from the pill are possible but probably would not be serious, he says Other than that I can’t think of anything (wrong)," Luethy says The pills have sold well since Evergreen began stocking them in September she says Dana Gardner, owner-partner of Sahalie Natural Foods, also notices heavy sales of the pills They re selling pretty well Gardner says "I've been get ting pretty good feedback on them " She says Sahalie doesn t carry a heavy stock of the pills because "it's kind of a fad thing like Aloe Vera or Spirulma " I don't want to get stuck with the stuff if demand declines, she says So far demand is up. and Sahalie is making repeat sales she says "I had a woman come in who said she ate spaghetti five nights one week and still lost weight She said tell people to buy it because it really works Graduation ceremonies axed About 700 University students are candidates for degrees at the end of winter term, accord ing to officials in the registrar s office For the second year, com mencement ceremonies — held at the end of each academic quarter since Decemeber 1963 — have been cancelled for fall and winter terms to help the University save money How ever several schools, colleges and departments plan informal receptions to honor their graduates Diplomas will be mailed to all who complete graduation requirements by the end of winter term (March 19) Univer sity officials say graduates should receive their diplomas within about 10 weeks of the end of the term Students who haven't received their diplomas by late May or early June should call the registrar s office at 686-3249 TRACK TOWN PIZZA The only thing that surpasses our pizza is our personality.
