Men lose 87-74 Duck women drop Utah It wasn't exactly a sterling performance that powered the Oregon women's basketball team to a 73-63 victory over Utah Saturday, but it was good enough to give coach Elwin Heiny the 100th win of his car eer The Oregon men weren't as fortunate as the Ducks dropped their Saturday contest to San Diego State 87-74, thanks to a 14-0 scoring spurt by the Aztecs in San Diego Once again, it was Bev Smith who took the wheel for the Oregon women The Ducks' senior played the whole game and chipped in a game-high 28 points on 12 of 26 from the field Poor defense by the Ducks allowed Utah to never trail by more than 11 points, as the Utes scored on only 37 3 percent of their shots from the field, but shoddy defense by Oregon al lowed them to stay in the game Utah was able to close an 11- point Duck margin to four points with under four minutes to play by breaking through Oregon's full-court press with relative ease and outwitting the Oregon defense Smith, however, came through in the closing minutes of the game with several big buckets to put the Ducks out of range Beside Smith, Oregon got a strong offensive effort from jun ior forward Mary Ann Stoican and freshman forward Chris Metzger Stoican popped in 14 points on 7 of 15 from the field in 34 minutes and Metzger added 13 in 33 minutes and also con tributed 10 rebounds. Smith and sophomore canter Alison Lang had 15 and 11 boards for Oregon The Oregon men were speared by the Aztecs in San Diego The Ducks led the game at the half 44-42, but were outscored by the Aztecs 14-0 to open the second half, and the Ducks were unable to put together any real threats to that lead as 'Oregon lost its first road game of the season It was a case where the Ducks played an inspired, if not well executed game for the first half, before falling to numerous mis takes in the second half Oregon had the lead in Sophomore Continued from Page 12 in the final round Sophomore Rick O’Shea gave the Ducks another win at 158. topping PSU's tough sen ior Rick McReynolds 10-5 O'Shea is one of several aching Ducks and he was bothered by a sore back during the match O'Shea built a 7-2 first round lead, increased it to 8-2 in the second, then grimmaced and held on for the win At 167 the Ducks' Paul Sheriff destroyed PSU's Vince Barbour 12- 1, boosting the team score to 21 -3 in favor of the Webfoots Another hurting Duck, fresh man Charles Nutter, returned from an injury to beat PSU sen ior Chris Bull 10-5 at 177 After that Hochanadel make it a quick ending with his pin, and Dan Cook won the heavyweight match by forfeit to account for the final score "I didn't think we would win by this much," Finley said shooting from the field, hitting 30 of 67 shots for a 44 8 per centage, while San Diego State made 30 of 71 from the field for a 42 3 percentage The difference was made at the foul line The Ducks, true to form, sent the Aztecs to the charity stripe 35 times — more than twice the amount of free throws the Ducks were given Oregon made a higher percent age of its free throws, but San Diego State's 27 of 35 from the line gave the Aztecs what they needed to win, as Oregon made 14 of 17 free throws Oregon's senior forward, John Greig led all scorers with 21 points Junior forward Don Plummer and junior guard Keith Smith led the Aztecs with 20 and 18 points, respectively Freshman center Jerry Adams, sophomore forward David Brantley and junior for ward Jerome Williams each had 10 points for the Ducks as guards Fred Cofield and Paul Bain only managed to combine for 11 points The men take on Richmond Friday at McArthur Court, before heading to Portland after Christmas to play in the Far West Classic Basketball Tour nament The men open the Pacific 10 Conference schedule with back-to-back encounters at Me Arthur Court with Arizona and Arizona State Jan. 2 and 3. The women’s next game will be against Louisiana State University at the Giusti Invita tional Wednesday in Portland Both tournaments take place in the Memorial Coliseum Tme Giusti runs Dec 16-18, and the Far West runs Dec 26-29.
