15 seconds to pin Portland State freshman Karl Pope in a 190-pound match, helping the Duck wrestlers flatten PSU 36-3 in dual meet action Friday at McArther Court For the Ducks it was their third dual meet victory in as many tries, and for Hochanadel, who hails from Ft Morgan, Colorado, it was win number six out of seven Five of those wins have come by falls "Lance is just doing super," said Duck coach Ron Finley, marvelling at Hochanadel's ability to keep the Viks' Pope on his back despite his strong moves "Lance is a great pinner I predict he will beat the single season (Oregon) record for pins this year " The current record is 21 falls, set by Don Brown in 1979 Oregon's Mike Erb got things going with a 5-0 decision over quick PSU freshman Anthony Amado at 118 pounds, before Miles Hancock did a job on the Viks' Mike Baker 14-2 at 126 pounds Senior Cliff Porter posted his fourth triumph of the season with a 6-3 decision over PSU's Mike Hubbard at 134 Porter took a 4-2 lead into the final round, then clinched the win with a takedown with 1 07 remaining, after Hubbard had climbed to within one point on an escape The Viks only win came at 142. when a pair of freshmen hit the college mat for the first time Tme Vikings' Boyd Goodpas ture survived a late charge by Oregon's Lorenzo West, hold ing on for a 14-9 win The big showdown of the night came at 150 where Duck standout Bill Nugent tangled with PSU All-American Charlie Lucas It was a hotly contested match that saw Nugent claim an 8-3 lead after two rounds before Lucas came charging back Lucas was awarded two penalty points and used a takedown and an escape to make things inter esting before dropping a 9-8 decision "I think it was great that they put Charlie against Bill Nugent." said Finley of the battle Both wrestlers usually compete at 142 "If you ever give him (Lucas) an inch, he'll be all over you," the coach said, adding that Nugent gave him that inch Continued on Page 13 sports Ducks Portland bound Women play in Giusti, men face Classic field By TERRY RHOADES OMtw Enwrald While students complete final exams and head home for the Christmas break, the Oregon women s basketball team will go trophy hunting in the talent-packed Giusti Tournament in Portland this week, and the men will take on a talented field in the Far West Basketball Classic Dec 26-29 The women, one of the tournament's early favorites, take a 3-1 season record and a national ranking (16th) into the eight-team tournament that starts Wednesday at the Memorial Coliseum But according to Oregon coach Elwin Heiny, the Ducks have their work cut out for them “Every game we play will be tough," says Heiny "We re going to have to play strong, with a lot of effort, and then come back strong again All the games will be draining " Tennessee, runner-up in last year's AIAW national championships and ranked second na tionally in preseason polls, is the tourney's top seed The Wednesday night session matches Oregon State and California at 6:30, with the Ducks meeting Louisiana State at 8 30 If Oregon can slap another defeat on its first-round opponent (Oregon defeated LSU twice last year), their likely semifinal opponent will be rival Oregon State "They have more people scoring and are playing very well," Heiny says of the Beavers, who are 3-3 this season after losing All-American Carol Menken to graduation "Their biggest threat is still their defense, especially their half-court defense,” he says If the Ducks do reach the finals their work won't get any easier A strong tall, and quick Tennessese squad should easily win their quarter-final and semi-final games and get to Friday night s 8:30 championship final "They (the Lady Vols) haven’t been winning lately, losing to Colorado (who defeated Oregon 68-67 this season) and Southern California this past week on the road, but I think they'll be ready to play in Portland ' predicts Heiny As for the Ducks' tournament hopes Heiny is weighing his team's Christmas break, joining an eight-team field in the Far West Classic The Ducks, runners-up to Oregon State in last year's tournament, will meet Wisconsin on the second day of the Classic in a 7 p m game Other first-round games in the tourney, which is played at the Memorial Coliseum, are OSU vs Pittsburgh, the 26th at 7 pm, and Idaho vs Iowa at 9pm The next night Portland meets Tennes see at 9 p m
