University news Registration slots change next term The winter term registration schedule contains registration times that have been changed since fall term Registration times for seniors and graduate students have been expanded, and only two groups of freshmen, sophomores and juniors register on the first time, Jan 4 But no one has lost their place in the system Students who expected to register near the beginning based on the fall term schedule keep their priority, they just will enroll later during the two days of registration, according to Registrar Wanda Johnson The schedule was revised because of a large bottleneck in graduate and senior enrollment in the fall, she says Financial forms available at office The financial aid office begins handing out 1982-83 aid applications Monday in Oregon Hall, Room 260 Marilyn Bader, financial aid counselor, advises students to apply early All application material must be received by March 1 for "priority" consideration, she says Scholarship applications won't be ready until registration, but will be handed out there, Bader says For more information about financial aid, call 686-3221 Higher ed cuts discussed on TV A locally produced television show will bring together educators, legislators and other state officials Monday night to discuss higher education financial problems and possible solutions for those problems The show, which will be aired on KEZI (channel 9) at 9 pm, will "get together those making the hard decisions," according to moderator Jack Hamann Guests include Chancellor Roy Lieuallen, police superintendent John Williams, human services director Leo Heckstrum, house speaker Hardy Myers, senate president Fred Heard and Irv Fletcher of the AFL-CIO Lane County will be represented by representatives Margie Hendriksen, Mary Burrows, Peg Jolin and Grattan Kerans, and Sen Ed Fadeley After a review of the 20-percent cut requested by Gov Vic Atiyeh, the round-table discussion will focus on alternative proposals to cutting budgets 752 to graduate by end of fall term Some 750 University students are candidates for degrees at the end of fall term, according to officials in the registrar’s office Among fall term's 752 degree candidates are 475 receiving bachelor s degrees, 204 completing master's degrees, 69 finishing doctoral degrees and four earning law degrees For the second year, commencement ceremonies — held at the end of each academic quarter since December, 1963 — have been cancelled for fall and winter terms to help the University save money Diplomas will be mailed to all who complete graduation requirements by term's end Grades available on December 28 Fall term grades can be picked up Dec. 28 beginning at 8 a m at the Registrar’s Office on the second floor of Oregon Hall. After that day, grades will be available Jan. 3 from 5 to 8 p m., also at the Registrar's Office, where staff will continue to distribute grades through registration Jan 4 and on through registration week The University is handing grades out — instead of mailing them — because it’s cheaper, says Registrar Wanda Johnson She says she's optimistic that the new computer programs used this summer to process grades will work well, and says the computing staff has been working "day and night" to ensure all goes smoothly. Libraries open over Christmas The University library will change its hours beginning Dec 18 for the Christmas break. Other libraries and research services will operate on similar schedules of "banker's hours" for the holidays The University Archives will be closed Dec 24 through Jan. 4 All libraries will be closed on the weekends, Christmas Day, and New Years Day Main Building.
