jeff cfickerson/sportcuts Beat of a different drum I had a recurring nightmare over the sum mer months The time: January 1, 1982 The place: Pasadena, Calif Just before the wave of green jerseys flooded the field, signaling the University of Oregon’s long-awaited return to the Rose Bowl, the stadium announcer chokes out the words “Ladies and gentlemen Now for our na tional anthem by the Michigan Wolverine and Daisy Duck marching bands '' I caught myself in the double-take Wasn't that supposed to be the Fighting Duck march ing band7 Not this time The University, in a financial mess from the previous year and who knows how many years before that, had said good bye to the costly marching band But with all of the bowl talk eminating from the football camp, is compared to, say, the University of Washington’s 'Tequila Players." Nevertheless, the band is out there I, for one, commend the band for being out on the field, out in the rain during the Husky game And the fans? So few of them ap preciated the efforts of the volunteers that I could probably have picked out each in dividual hand clap in the confines of Autzen stadium One of the problems, admittedly, is the band is not as flashy as other bands around the conference The boring halftime show, I believe, is a result of the crowd not getting into the band’s performance. Even Oregon State students find occasion to support the crazy antics of their marching band (excuses that they have, little else to get excited about at a football game are beginning to lose some support) <»-»v. uumii Mo trator had a backup plan We could prob ably get the Daisy Ducks They out number the band anyway, and if the Oregon crowd took notice, it would be better than having real musicians out there that few in the crowd ever cared about So, those great ladies, who have been supporting Oregon sports for 10 years, decided to don all of the required parapher nalia and pound the The solution to this is to get the band members to look like they are enjoying themselves out there I can't believe that this university, with a lunatic fringe very much in evi dence, has such a hard time getting band members who march to the beat of a somewhat differ ent drum — people who can have a good time, no mat ter what the score, no matter how much rain fills the tubas Marching band grassy tun ot the Rose Bowl Most of the women had never even played a musical instrument before But then again, neither had many of them been to Pasadena before, so the Daisy Ducks gave the green light to the administration It actually went quite well The Daisy Ducks went through the motions while the mighty Wolverine band provided the music Nobody noticed a thing Back to reality The chances of Oregon making it into Pasadena New Year’s Day are not very good It's too bad, because Oregon does have a marching band It's true that the University's marching band is understaffed and underfinanced It doesn't have many people in it either — not if it director Gerald Poe can go ahead and say his program was hurt by bad press coverage — it was But for the three years I have been here, the marching band has been an object of ridicule in the bleachers People at Washington and Oregon State have discovered what it takes to have a well liked band It takes a little craziness University marching band members might feel foolish doing head bops and rolling around on the football field, but, given time, Oregon football fans would respond with ap proval Of course, there is another alternative What do the Daisy Ducks do on Saturdays, but watch the Ducks at Autzen Stadium? 1 and to think we met through an ODE PERSONAL 774 E. 13th Above Kinko’s 683-5577 PORTLAND - EAST COAST $358 round trip PORTLAND - CHICAGO $31$ round trip EUGENE - EAST COAST $398 round trip Watch for our chalkboard specials on 13th street. 683-5577 ---> Dinners from $4.95: Spanakopitta, Souvlaki, Marinated Trout, Moussaka, Yiros. . . . poppis GREEK PEASANT FOOD WINE & SPIRIT 675 E. 13th Ave. 343*0846 Closed Tuesdays 11 30 a m -10 30 pm weekdays. 9 a m 10 30 p m weekends Grand r—— Opening —-v * srameMDs * I ■ z o 0u Z5 o 0 1 I I ★ Full Service Salon * * Under New Management * ★ Grand Opening Special ★ ★ Perms $25.00 * ★ reg $35 00 ★ ★ Includes haircut and set Long hair extra ★ mt ^^42-2 1410 Orchard ^ (Upstairs in Suite 203, behind McKay s) ^ 2165 Walk-ins Bring coupon tor special price—expires Oct 31. 1981 I Z o CL o 0 1 I I BE THE LIFE OF YOUR NEXT PARTY!
