Acting troupes offer plenty of plays By MATT MEYER Of th» Eimnld There's more to do in Eugene during the summer than sit and watch the ivy grow on Deady Hall Eugene's acting troupes have a full line of shows ready for the summer months For openers, the Oregon Repertory Theatre has a double bill, “Laundry and Bourbon" and "Lone Star,’’ written by James McLure and directed by Will Emery Both are one-act comedies involving small-town folks in Texas who attempt to recapture the joys of their youth, with humorous results Emery says the plays are McLure's portrait of "a hilarious slice of American life Texas style " The shows opened Wednesday and will run Tuesday through Sunday until July 12, with evening performances starting at 8 p m and Sunday matinees at 2 p m Prices range from $3 50 to $7 For tickets or information, call the ORT box office at 485-1946 The ORT also will present the musical "Carousel'' this summer on the Eugene Mall David Lunney is directing the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein production The show is the third production that combines members of the ORT, the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, the Eugene Ballet and the Eugene Opera in what Lunney calls "one of America’s greatest mu sicals.” "Carousel" will open July 10, with preview per formances July 8 and 9 The public also is invited to special free rehearsal performances next to the fountain on the downtown mall Monday through Thursday evenings from 6 p m to 10 p.m The rehearsals, already underway, will continue until July 8. The University's Carnival Theatre will present three productions this summer The series' opener, "Born Yesterday," is the "classic tale of a dumb blonde who gets educated and becomes a whole person," says director Bob Barton "Although it was written in 1946, it’s very much about women’s consciousness,” he says The comedy is about a gangster who goes to Washington, D C , to buy some senators After arriving in Washington, he hires a reporter to educate his moll so she’ll be accepted by the city’s socialites The reporter and the blonde, of course, fall in love and undo the gangster’s wicked dealings Lillian Heilman's "The Little Foxes,” which is currently playing on Broadway with Elizabeth Taylor in the starring role, will be the Carnival Theatre’s second summer offering Director Faber DeChaine says the play is ' very timely” because it deals with how a family survives during a period of depression "It's a story of people on hard times, about how they cope with that and the American dream," he says Grant McKernie will direct the Carnival Theatre's production of "Inherit The Wind.” The play is based on the Scopes trial of 1925, which was perhaps the most important legal confrontation between evolu tionists and creationists "The drama of the play," says McKernie, "is about the loss of faith in the Twentieth Century and how we deal with that It's one of the most successful and most repeated plays in American literature It hasn't been done much recently because it's been too hot an issue." "Born Yesterday" will appear July 2-4, 23 and Aug 1, 7, and 13. "Little Foxes" will show July 9-11, 24, 30 and Aug 8 and 14. "Inherit The Wind" will be presented July 16-18, 25, 31 and Aug. 6 and 15.
