Twelve advance at nationals Twelve Oregon women ad vanced to the semi-finals or fin als in their events at the AIAW national track meet in Austin, Texas. Despite the sweltering heat, Oregon came through with a series of outstanding perfor mances, said Oregon coach Tom Heinonen. One of the most spec tacular of those came from so phomore Sally Harmon in the javelin. Harmon had the best throw in Thursday’s qualifying round, a 172-5 toss that broke her personal best of 169-10, set while a senior at Springfield High School. Harmon was ninth in last year’s AIAW meet, held at Hayward Field. As expected, Leann Warren easily won her qualifying heats in the 800 and 1,500 meters with the top marks of the day. War ren, the world leader in the mile this season, clocked a 4:22.7 to advance the finals in the 1,500. In the 800, Warren ran 2:07.61 to qualify for the semis. The Duck sophomore was runnerup in last year's AIAW 800 and is the U S. leader in the event this season. Ranza Clark also qualified for the semis in the 800 with a 2:10.29. In the 100 hurdles, Lexie Miller (13.72) and Kris Costello (13.76) advanced to the semis. Grace Bakari ran 53.98 for second in her 400 heat. Bakari was sixth at last year’s nation als. Melanie Batiste advanced to the 200 semis with a wind-aided 23.66, her best time this season Oregon's mile relay team, the defending national cham pion, qualified for the finals, finishing second in their heat to Tennessee. On the field, Karen McDon aid threw 162-11 in the discus to qualify for Saturday’s finals. But Oregon’s Quenna Beasley came one-inch short from a berth in the discus finals, finish ing 13th. “It was a really good day for us," said Heinonen. “We ad vanced a lot of people and got a lot of top performances. We re in good shape." Competition will continue today and Saturday. Cioiters sup at tournament, byu leads Oregon’s men's golf team slipped to 28th place Thursday at the NCAA national cham pionships, shooting 301 for a 610 total at the Stanford University course. Brigham Young moved into first place ahead of Texas A&M and yesterday’s leader, Oral Roberts, with a six-under-par 574 Texas A&M is second at 579, while Oral Roberts is tied for third with the University of Houston with 580. Arizona State University re tained its hold on the top five spots with a 581 two-day total. Leading the tournament is Rich Dalpos of Purdue with a four-under-par 69-69-138. He is followed by Utah State’s JayDon Blake, 70-69-139. Oregon’s golfers played bet ter today, said coach Jim Fer guson. “But so did everybody else.” Shell Joyner, a freshman, continues to lead the Duck squad, 75-72-147. Following him are Scott Krieger (77-75-152), Dave DeLong (80-75-155), Steve Bowen (78-79-157) and Eric Johnson (79-80-159).
