"Our team usually starts slowly in the spring because we don’t play much in the winter," Ferguson says. “That's been the history of golf at Oregon since I have been here." Ferguson congratulates him self now for not pushing the panic button back in April. The Ducks have regrouped and will head to the NCAA Champion ships, May 27, at Palo Alto, Calif. It is Oregon’s eighth appear ance at the three-day tourney since Ferguson became coach nine years ago. And it comes while many of the Oregon golfers are playing the best golf of their season, thanks to warmer weather and increased playing, Ferguson says. "When you play all winter in Oregon without any competi tion, you don’t know what to expect. But we’ve played better every week, and by now we are playing on par with teams like use. Belief in their abilities has put the Ducks over the edge, Fer guson says. “The team is really pumped for the NCAA Cham pionships." Five golfers — Shell Joyner, Scott Kreiger, Eric Johnson, Steve Bowen and Dave Delong — will represent Oregon at the NCAA tourney. And the tournament comes just when freshman Joyner and senior Krieger, Oregon’s number-one and number-two golfers, are playing their best golf of the season. They tied for 10th with 297 at the Pac-10 Championship, pushing the Ducks into third place. Joyner’s recent performance may catch some by surprise, but not Ferguson. "We knew he would be a great one,” Ferguson says. “His confidence builds each week. "I was in a terrible slump until I went home for spring break,” Joyner says. “It gave me time to just concentrate on golf.” The freshman has reacted well to being the Ducks’ top golfer in his first season. “It’s pleasing, but I’m not sur prised,” Joyner says. "I came here to be number one on the team. There are a lot of good players on this team and anyone of them could have (been number one). It was just me who ended up with the better year.” At the NCAA Championships, Ferguson hopes the Ducks place in the top 15. “We aver aged 370 at the Pac-10. If we improve one shot per golfer each round, we can be talking about the top 10." But Ferguson is cautious about making predictions on individual performances. With good reason. He recalls when a relatively unknown Oregon so phomore, Jeff Sanders, placed third in the NCAA Champion ships in 1975 and earned All American status. “So anything can happen."
