Conference to discuss women’s issues By PAUL TELLES Of the Emerald The 1981 Women’s Symposium begins today with a full schedule of speeches, workshops and art exhibits. At 9:30 a m. in the EMU Dad’s Room, symposium co-directors Dee Dee Akiyama and Linda Chase will officially open the symposium, which concludes Friday at 7:30 p.m. Today’s events will include. “Racism: Taking Action,’’ a three part program sponsored by the YWCA The first part, a panel discussion titled “What is Racism?,” will begin at 10 a m. in the Dad’s Room. The second part, “Workshops for Discussion and Introspection,” will be held in three separate sections, one for minority women, one for white women and one for men and women of all races. The sessions will begin at 2 p.m. The session for minority women will be held in EMU Room 214, the one for white women will be held in EMU Room 213, and the mixed session will be held in the Dad's Room. The program’s third part, a panel discussion of coalition-building against racism, will begin at 4 p.m. in the Dad’s Room. Other events today will be: A panel discussion of “Choices in Women’s Health Care” at 10 a m. in the EMU Forum. A discussion of “Coalition Building Across Differences” at 10 a m. in EMU Room 108. A workshop on “Current Trends in Maternity Health Care” at 10:30 a.m. in EMU Room 101. A speech on “Contemporary Issues in Asian-American Women Writer’s Work” by Merle Woo, an occasional teacher of Ethnic Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, at noon in the Dad’s Room. A discussion of “Christianity: Femin ine Mystique or Faith in Action?” at 1:30 p.m. in EMU Room 101. A discussion of “Development: For People or Profit” in EMU Room 215 at 2 p.m. A videotape workshop at 3 p.m. in EMU Room 110 at 3 p.m. A "Coalition-Building Potluck” at the YWCA at 5:30 p.m. The showing of two films, “The Mak \\ ing of the Dinner Party" and "Nigun,” at 7:30 p.m. in 177 Lawrence. A speech on the right to resist and fight in self-defense by Nilak Butler, of the American Indian Movement, at 8 p.m. in the Dad’s Room. A women’s art exhibit will open at noon in Room 167 and continue until the symposium’s end on Friday. Wednesday’s events will be: A discussion of "Breastfeeding Today” at 9:30 a.m. in EMU Room 108. A discussion of “Lesbian Concep tion: Another Way to Use Your Turkey Baster’’at 9:30 a m. in EMU Room 214. This discussion will be open to women only. A workshop on “Fat is a Feminist Issue" at 10 a.m. in EMU Room 214. A panel discussion of the "Hazards in Reproductive Options" at 10:30 a.m. in EMU Room 110. A women-only discussion of "Separ atism and Women’s Revolution" at 10:30 a.m. in EMU Room 214. A discussion of “Friends of Lesbians: How You Can be an Ally” at 10:30 a.m. in EMU Room 101. A discussion of “Coming Out Before ‘Coming of Age’ ’’ at 11:30 a.m. in EMU Room 101. A discussion of “Mothering in the Lesbian Community" at noon in EMU Room 214. A discussion of "Being a Strong Woman in the 80s" at 10:30 a m. in EMU Room 110. A workshop on female sexuality at 10:30 a m. in EMU Room 214. A workshop on lesbian health care at 11 a m. in EMU Room 215. An assertiveness training session at 12:30 p.m. in EMU Room 108. A discussion of the “Impact of Poli tics on Families, Women and Children’’ at 1:30 p.m. in the Dad’s Room. A self-help workshop on women’s health care at 1:30 p.m. in EMU Room 215. A panel discussion of the "Feminist Literary Subculture’’ at 2:30 p.m. in EMU Room 110. A film on domestic violence, titled "To Love, Honor and Obey," at 2:30 p.m. in Studio B of the Instructional Media Center. A speech on female alcholism by Diane Reed, a member of Women for Sobriety, at 3 p.m. in EMU Century Room A. A speech on how women can avoid financial failures by investment broker Mary Covington at 3:30 p.m in EMU Room 101. A belly-dancing workshop at 5:30 p.m. in EMU Room 113. The showing of a film about photo grapher Imogen Cunningham at 7 p.m. in Science 123. A dance at 7:30 p.m. at 1235 Kincaid St. with music provided by First Light, an all women rock ’n’ roll band. Admis sion to the dance will be $2-4, based on a sliding scale. Friday’s events will be: A workshop on the sexual victimiza tion of children at 9:30 a m. in EMU Room 112. A workshop on building sexual-confi dence at 10 a m. in EMU Room 215. A discussion of the problems of older women at 10:30 a m. in EMU Room 108. A workshop on "Women and the Arms Race" at 11:30 a m. in EMU Room 337. A speech on American Indian Women by Susan Molares, of the Amer ican Indian Movement, at noon in the Dad’s Room. A workshop on women in the media at 1:30 p.m. in the EMU Forum. A workshop on "The Link between Nutrition and the Menstrual Blues” at 1:30 p.m. in EMU Room 108. A discussion of "Spirituality: the Feminine Experience" at 3:30 p.m. in EMU Room 101. A speech on black issues by Denise Carty-Bennia, professor of law at Northeastern University, at 7:30 p.m. in the EMU Forum.
