During the past dual meet season, the Ducks met three Northwest foes and defeated them by a cumulative total of 122 points. Oregon then capped that feat last weekend in Cor vallis at the regional champion ships by outdistancing the field by 119 points. It was the Duck’s fourth consecutive team title. "We re just too deep for this kind of competition,” said Oregon coach Tom Heinonen after witnessing his mile relay team cap the meet with a 3:49.49 win at Oregon State’s Wayne Valley Field. Oregon not only won 13 of 19 events in the three-day meet, but captured a truckload of seconds, thirds, fourths and so on. Heinonen was most pleased with javelin thrower Sally Har mon and sprinter Melanie Batiste. Harmon defeated a stellar field on her first throw — a season-best 168-5. Batiste, hampered all season by a hamstring injury, won the 200 for the fourth straight year to become only the third to ac complish that feat in regionals. “After losing a tough one to (Oregon State’s) Asa (Penning ton) in the 100, she came back and demolished the field in the 200," Heinonen said of Batiste. The Oregon senior clocked a 24.65 in the 200, followed by softball rematch awaits women against Beavers Oregon’s women’s softball team will face Oregon State today in a rematch of a game that rained out last month. The Ducks, 9-14 for the sea son, split a double-header with the Beavers May 1, winning the second game of that contest 6-2 off a Yogi Johnson homer that scored three runs in the first inning. Freshman Marcy Sowa, who has stepped in to backup pitcher Teri Anderson who has a sore arm, pitched the win. “We re looking for another win against them," said coach John Feeney. ‘They’re a tough ball team, but I know we can beat them." Today’s game is set to begin at 2:30 on the softball field, south of Hayward Field. Rockets tie up series, 91-86 HOUSTON (AP) - Mike Dun leavy and Moses Malone led a third-quarter Houston charge that carried the Rockets to 91-86 win over the Boston Cel tics Sunday to tie the National Basketball Association cham pionship series at two victories apiece. Malone scored eight points to lead a 10-2 Houston surge and give the Rockets a 60-52 lead with 7:56 left in the third quarter. Then Dunleavy scored 11 points in the last 6:14 of the third period to help the Rockets take a 75-67 lead into the fourth quarter Keepsake J Registered Diamond Rings J Keepsake guarantees a truly perfect ) \ diamond of fine white color and correct t j cut There is no finer diamond ring J Something beautiful for everyone l LAMIA Jewelers ' jKeepsake Corner | Valley River Center 484-1303 ' ) [>ady 10 OO- 9 S«r 10 00 « Sun II 0M teammate Lena Fritzson (25.41) and Pennington (25.49). The whipping winds, however, prevented Oregon's sprinters and 400 relay from meeting the AIAW qualifying standards, which Heinonen had hoped they could do at this meet. "You take one look at the way the flags are blowing and you forget about qualifying marks,” Heinonen said Harmon, who put the AIAW qualifying mark behind her a long time ago, continues to im prove this season despite her "transition” work during prac tice. Harmon is learning a new throwing style, and that usually means a slight dropoff in per formance until that style is per fected. Harmon, however, was a model of consistency, following her winning throw with tosses of 167-9% and 164-5. Oregon's Lexie Miller was put to work by the meet’s schedule as she shuttled between the long jump and both hurdle races. She won all three, as expected, even though she only had enough time to step up to the line and go in the 400 hur dles. "I didn’t have time to run through some hurdles before the race,” she said. "So I let my body run it and not worry about my mind.” First-place finishers: 100 — Asa Pennington, OSU, 12.3 200 — Melanie Batiste, Ore, 24 65. 400 — Grace Bakari, Ore, 54 0 800 — Ranza Clark, Ore, 2:11.9. 1,500 - Sandra Gregg, UW. 4:22.9 3,000 - Regina Joyce, UW, 8:59.39 5,000 - Eryn Forbes, Ore, 16:48.3. 100 hurdles — Lexie Miller, Ore, 14.43. 400 hurdles — Miller, Ore, 1:01 9 High jump — Sonja Crowther, OSU, 5-9.
