VOTER’S GUIDE for the UO Bookstore’s Board of Directors Elections held Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voting booths are located at The Bookstore, the EMU or the Library. FRESHMAN POSITION to serve two years (One to be elected) Paul Barish Statement not submitted. Mark Burgess Statement not submitted. GRADUATE STUDENT POSITION (Two positions: one to serve a one year term and one to serve a two year term. Two to be elected.) Charles Edelson As a director on the Bookstore's Board of directors, I would commit myself to maintaining its successful operation. I further pledge to work diligently at solving problems as they arise. These are not empty words; I take responsibili ties very seriously. I graduated from UO last spring with a B.S. in Economics and am now finishing my first year in the School of Law. For the last two years I've been the program director with the competitive speech team. The benefits of a successful bookstore accrue to all students. Please allow me to serve all of you. David P. Saltzman The issue is relatively simple: Every University student is feeling the painful affects of paying higher prices for textbooks and supplies. Therefore, it is essential to exploit the volume purchasing power and tax-exempt status of The Bookstore. It possesses a natural cost advantage over competing stores in the area, and I propose to have all students and faculty members take full advantage of daily savings. Precedent has been established by the current Board of Directors to have representation with advanced financial skills in order to critically review the proposed budgeting procedures. Elect someone who can watch over how we will spend our money in the 1981-82 academic year. Bobbie Jean Weidner Appointed by the Board to serve the remainder of Scott Drysdale’s unexpired term of office, I presently serve as one of the graduate student representatives on the Bookstore Board of Directors. Although I have only been on the Board for one term, I have begun to learn the structure of the bookstore and have welcomed the opportunity to apply the theory I am learning in my MBA classes to a vital, successful business. During my tenure I have developed, and as a candidate I support, the following three goals for the Bookstore: 1. Provide optimum service to all members. The best products, supplies and books must be available when they are needed at the lowest price. 2. Expand benefits to all members. Currently textbooks are discounted 11%. Benefits should be expanded according to the success of the Bookstore. 3. Encourage outstanding management and sound business practice. The Bookstore must meet members’ needs efficiently as well as be a thriving business. What makes me unique as a candidate? Business orientation and demon strated experience in group process: Student in Masters of Business Administration program Bookstore Board of Directors, Spring 1981 House Director of Chi Omega Sorority Former school teacher (serving on MANY committees and boards). I hope you will support my candidacy by voting for Bobbie Jean Weidner for graduate student representative on the Bookstore Board of Directors. John Ragsdale The Bookstore is entering a new era, one which requires greater student involvement and community support. With sales totaling $5.6 million, the Bookstore has changed significantly from the little store of 60 years ago. As a result of this growth, the Bookstore Board faces increasingly complex management problems. One such problem is the growing cost of warehousing merchandise inventory. If elected I would recommend that merchandise by evaluated in terms of student demand, eliminating those items gathering dust. Another problem, a potentially serious one, concerns the growing animosity toward the Bookstore felt by some local businessmen. If elected I would establish a liaison with the business community to inform businessmen of our policies and dispose of misconceptions about our store. Finally I believe a director’s most important responsibility is to recognize the needs of students and ensure that those needs are addressed by Bookstore policy. As a MBA in management, I offer the knowledge and experience a Bookstore Board position demands. I’ve worked as a contract coordinator, and I realize the positive effects of communication, compromise, and understand ing on group effectiveness. In addition, I’ve served as a biologist on environ mental committees where people and natural resources were the bottom-line. Vote J R. He cares about "your” money. SOPHOMORE POSITION to serve two years (Two to be elected.) Scott C. Essig As a member of the Bookstore, I understand that students should be able to receive the best benefits from its existence. Being a Finance major, I will apply my time and knowledge to the issue of the Bookstore revenue. Especially the funds available to reinvest. The Bookstores nonprofit organization is an opportunity for us to diversify our product lines and allow higher price reductions for students. Although this has been a hot issue with local retailers, they quickly forget that our tuition and expenses are high and we deserve the right to serve ourselves. The Bookstore was established to serve the students and as a member of the board my primary concern will be the students voice. I urge your participation in the election and in making suggestions for im provement. Bryan J. VanMeter Our Unversity of Oregon Bookstore is owned by all students; each student is a shareholder in the corporation. Many students are not aware of this fact. If elected, I would endeavor to increase student awareness of the operation of the Bookstore and of our interest in in. There is a definite need for improved communication between the owners of the Bookstore and the Bookstore's managers. A common complaint that I have heard from fellow students concerning the Bookstore is the textbook buy-back policy. I would like to work with the University faculty, the individuals who buy back the books and the managers of the Bookstore to see if this policy could be run more efficiently and provide students with increased benefits. If I am elected, I will be able to serve on the board for two years and this be in a better position to make the Bookstore work for you it's owners. Thank you. Isacc Babbs Statement not submitted. John Sheehan Statement not submitted. FACULTY POSITION to serve two years (One to be elected.) Bob Lang Dedicated and effective management over a long period have made the University of Oregon Bookstore one of the leading University bookstores in the country by any measure, but management and directors know that im provements are possible. My central objective, if re-elected to the Board, is to work toward satisfying even better than at present the essential needs of members for an efficient textbook service for a general book department with as broad an inventory as is consistent with financial prudence, and for an extensive inventory of non-book educational supplies at the lowest possible prices. The manager of the Bookstore and the Board of Directors have been, and will be, happy to explain the operation of the store and its finances to any member, and will welcome any suggestions.
