Fraternities to act as escorts The University's fraternities are offering an escort service for women walking in the cam pus area. The service began Sunday and will continue through spring quarter. Two fraternities will assume the escort duties each week. This week's escorts will be provided by Phi Gamma Delta at 485-9051 or ext. 3244 and Sig ma Chi at 485-9309 or ext. 5293. The escorts will be available most hours and will go most places in the campus area, says Interfraternity Council Pres. Mark Hallquist. However, he says it will be left up to the dis cretion of the individual houses to determine if a request for an escort is unreasonable But “we didn’t want to have it full of rules because it would ruin the service,” he adds. The council tried to start an escort service after a University woman was raped in Adams Residence Hall during winter quarter, but Hallquist says it was too late in the quarter for the service to be effective. However, it’s more important to operate the service during Meeting slated to discuss transient problem in park Harassment and threats against some area residents by transients staying at the West University Area Neighborhood Park on 14th Avenue near Pat terson have increased, and neighbors now are trying to do something about it. A meeting to discuss just what can be done to stop harassment by transients will be held at 5 p.m. today at the park, accord ing to Pam Ford, of the West University Neighborhood As sociation. A Eugene police officer will be on hand to discuss the problem with interested neighbors. Ford says harassment and threats by transients increased dramatically last weekend. At least one neighbor had her life threatened by a transient, Ford says. Neighbors interested in cur tailing the harassment problem are encouraged to attend the meeting. spring quarter because more people walk in the spring, he says.
