DeNiro, Spacek also honored 1 1 J 1 \ 1 HOLLYWOOD (AP) - "Ordin ary People,” the intense drama of a wealthy family torn apart by the tragic death of a son, won three top honors at the 53rd Academy Awards Tuesday night — including best picture of 1980 and an Oscar for Robert Red ford in his directing debut. Timothy Hutton, making his film debut at 19 playing the family’s guilt-ridden younger son, was named best supporting actor, as the awards were given out a day late because of the shooting of Pres. Reagan. Sissy Spacek, as country singer Loretta Lynn in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and Robert DeNiro, as the blustery boxer Jake La Motta on the skids in “Raging Bull,” were best ac tress and actor. Mary Steenburgen, as Melvin Dummar's kooky first wife in “Melvin and Howard,” was best supporting actress, and the movie also won a best original screenplay Oscar for Bo Gold man. A fourth Oscar for “Ordinary People" went to Alvin Sargent for his screenplay adaptation. DeNiro’s victory gives him and Jack Lemmon the distinc tion of being the only men to collect both actor and support ing actor Oscars. He won the supporting award for “The Godfather, Part II” in 1974. The supporting performer awards went to a pair of young first-time nominees. Both proved popular choices with the Music Center audience and both responded with youthful enthusiasm. Hutton, son of the late actor Jim Hutton, contributed a sen timental note when he closed his speech by saying: “Finally, I’d like to thank my father. I wish he was here.” The young man paid tribute to Redford and added, “I love ya." Miss Steenburgen, born in Newport, Ark., where her father was a railroad conductor, told the audience: “I’m gonna have to think up something new to dream about.” The most emotional moment of the evening came when Redford introduced Henry Fon da for a special award. The audience rose in tribute as Fon da walked slowly onto the stage, using a cane and looking all of his 75 years. The old Fonda vigor was in his voice, however, as he marveled about having been in films for 46 years. He added: “It’s been a very rewarding 46 years, and this has got to be the climax.” The award for original score went to Michael Gore, who also was the winner for best original song, for the title tune for "Fame," for which Dean Pitch ford wrote the lyrics. The best foreign-language film was the Soviet “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears." “The Empire Strikes Back,” biggest moneymaker of 1980, managed to collect two Oscars: for sound and a special award for visual effects. Roman Polanski’s “Tess" took three awards, for art direc tion, costume design and cin ematography. As expected, Reagan, a long time leader in the film commun ity, was much on everyone’s mind. At the outset, host Johnny Carson explained about the 24-hour delay and commented that the president "felt very good.” That brought strong ap plause from the audience. dis’ser ta’ tions Quick and inexpensive: We are graduate school approved and guarantee our copies to pass graduate school requirements and most orders can be completed within 24 hours.
