Selection process begins for new AD. University Vice Pres. Ray Hawk is expected to announce today the members of the com mittee that will oversee selec tion of a new athletic director. The committee then will spend the next three to four months choosing a successor to Athletic Director John Caine, who resigned March 23, said Hawk, University vice president for administration and finance. “We hope to have someone in the drivers seat by Sept. 1,” Hawk said Monday. Caine, who has been athletic director at the University for the past five years, said his resig nation was prompted by the athletic department’s current financial crisis. The AD’s 1980-81 deficit is currently es timated to be $600,000. “Essentially, the University decided they would like to have someone else guide this pro gram,’’ said Caine after an nouncing his resignation. “They are sensitive to the fact that we have a budget deficit, and most things do revolve around mon ey.” Caine’s resignation will become effective Wednesday, exactly five years after he as sumed the position. Deputy Athletic Director Julie Carson also announced her re signation, which will be effective today, during spring break. She will assume a faculty position in the English department Wed nesday. “The University administra tion is considering possible realignments of responsibliltes in the athletic administration," Carson said March 18. “We’ve all thought of the deputy direc tor position as an experiment, and I want to allow the Universi ty a free hand in considering a new administrative structure.” Carson was second in com mand to Caine and responsible for women's athletics. The committee to select a successor to Caine will be com posed of about 12 people, said Hawk, who added he had filled 10 spots by Monday evening. During the interim, a three member management team will share the duties of the athletic director. The three associate athletic directors — James Ferguson, Chris Voelz and Herb Yamana ka — will assume their new du ties Wednesday. Ferguson will be responsible for the men’s athletic programs and for support services, including sports medicine and equipment. Voelz will be responsible for the women's program, sports information and academic counseling. Yamanaka will be responsible for facilites, promotion and events management, Administration reviews ailing athletic department After reviewing the recom mendation from the Intercol legiate Athletic Committee, the University administration has decided to do some probing on its own. The IAC presented Acting Pres. Paul Olum with its recom mendation March 18. Five com mittee members opposed eliminating any sports to help solve the athletic department's budget deficit. The other four members suggested cutting either the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams or both gym nastics and men’s and women’s swimming. However, according to University Vice Pres. Ray Hawk, there was “not enough solid fiscal information to make a decision.” “Within a week we hope to have a better grasp of the situa tion,” Hawk said, adding his hope that the administration can make its final decision before the national letter of in tent deadline of April 8. The five IAC members oppos ing program cuts said in a joint statement that the University should “set aside for the pre sent the athletic department proposal to eliminate gymnas tics and swimming.
