* Kansas burns Sun Devils in NCAA From Associated Press reports WICHITA, Kan. — Tony Guy poured in 36 points and Kansas, in yet another stunning NCAA upset, mauled third-ranked Arizona State 88-71 Sunday in second-round basketball action of the Midwest Regional playoffs. Kansas will meet Wichita State in the semifinals. Earlier Sunday, Wichita State’s Randy Smithson sank two free throws with five seconds left after Iowa called an illegal timeout to lift the unranked Shockers past the 13th-ranked Hawkeyes, 60-56. Arizona State, heavily favored with a 24-3 record over the un heralded Jayhawks, now 24-7, hardly looked like the top ranked team remaining in the NCAA tournament. Kansas consistently befud dled the high-powered Sun Devil offense with a well-disci plined zone defense and held a surprising 45-29 halftime lead. The Jayhawks took command in the final eight minutes of the first half, outscoring the Sun Devils 24-8. Arizona State guard Byron Scott, bombing away over the zone at the outset of the second half, trimmed the Kansas lead to nine. But that was as close as they got. Virginia advances CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Fresh man Othell Wilson and senior Lee Raker sank three free throws in the final 25 seconds of play to give Virginia a 54-50 victory over Villanova in the second round of the NCAA East Regional Sunday. The Cavaliers will meet Ten nessee, an overtime winner over Virginia Commonwealth, at At lanta in Thursday’s regional semifinal game Wilson, who substituted for Raker in the Cavalier starting lineup, was fouled by Villa nova’s Tom Sienkiewicz in front of the Virginia bench. With 25 seconds remaining, Wilson converted both free throws to give Virginia a 53-50 lead. North Carolina wins EL PASO, Texas (AP) — James Worthy and Sam Perkins combined for 40 points Sunday as sixth-ranked North Carolina downed Pittsburgh 74-57 in the second-round of the NCAA West Regional basketball tour nament.
