Five minutes into the second half, Bev Smith tied the record. One minute later, she broke it. By the end of the game, Smith either owned or had tied every record in the Oregon book. But despite the standing ova tion from the crowd after she sank the basket that tied Julie Cushing's 1976-80 record, Smith was the first to point to the team’s effort over the visiting Cardinals. Predictably, the talk during the "celebration” timeout called by Oregon immediately after the record-tying basket talk didn't revolve around congratulations. "We all patted her on the back, but we wanted to change our defense at that time,” said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny about the timeout. So Oregon switched to a zone defense, the crowd waited for that record-breaking basket, and the Ducks kept their win ning streak going. "Things like this tend to take away from the team effort," said Smith in the McArthur Court training room long after the fans had dwindled away. "The ironic thing is that most of those points (579 last season) came off as sists from Julie." As a team, the Ducks hit 53.8 percent from the floor and 61.9 percent from the line. Oregon out-rebounded the Cards, 41-33, grabbed more steals (14-3) and had fewer turnovers (11-29). And everyone who took to the court played well, said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny. But the crowd, while it rewarded the Ducks for their outstanding play, had a special place for Smith Friday night. The standing ovation was only part of it. A special banner and constant cheering for most of the second half was a good in dication of how the crowd felt. Smith, a 6-1 junior, besides setting a career record of 1,404 points, added 26 points to Oregon’s game total, collected 10 rebounds and nabbed eight steals “She’d make us a great team, too,’’ said Stanford coach Dotty McCrea. “She’s the first player I’ve seen in years that reminds me of Carol Blazejowski, but she’s more aggressive.” Smith wasn’t the only Duck to play an outstanding game. Stanford coach Dotty McCrea handed out more praise to the victorious Ducks than Oregon allowed itself. ”USC is the only team that compares (to Oregon) in terms of physical, tough play,” McCrea said. "We tried everything. . .they’re a very poised ball club.” And that poise, said McCrea, could carry them all the way in the nationals. “That's what’s important,” said Smith. “Not the individual records but the team one ”1 feel it was a nice accomplishment for me but it’s not something that will make my year.” What will make Oregon’s year is a trip to the final four, but before then, the Ducks have five more league games to play, all in Mac Court, and the regional championships. The win improved UCLA's Pac-10 record to 9-3 and left it a single game behind second place Arizona State, 10-2, in the conference standings. Unbea ten Oregon State, number two nationally in the AP poll, remains entrenched in first place at 12-0.
