sports Photo by David W. Zahn Varsity cheerleaders have begun including more gymnastics in their routines Rally undergoes change to professional image Oregon’s varsity cheerlead ing squad is undergoing an image change, says cheer leader Al Woodruff. “We’re turning rally more or less into a sport." The cheerleaders are in the process of giving rally a professional image, Woodruff says. Besides cheering at football and men's basketball games, the group plans on "upholding the image of the University.” National competition provides one portion of the image change, says Woodruff. Signaling the move from en tertainment to sport has been the incorporation of more gymnastics and stunts in their routines, says Woodruff, who is one of 20 cheerleaders to make the All-American Col legiate Team. A segment of the groups new image was unveiled dur ing halftime at the UCLA game Saturday night. The cheer leaders debuted their dance team segment with a dance segment from "Chorus Line." "Our new image is to portray a squad that excells in perfor mance, does outstanding stunts and works well together,” Woodruff says. "We know what it takes now to be a good cheerleading squad.” Out of the darkness, The Throbber strikes.
