Varsity cheerleaders have begun including more gymnastics
in their routines
Rally undergoes change
to professional image
Oregon’s varsity cheerlead
ing squad is undergoing an
image change, says cheer
leader Al Woodruff.
“We’re turning rally more or
less into a sport."
The cheerleaders are in the
process of giving rally a
professional image, Woodruff
says. Besides cheering at
football and men's basketball
games, the group plans on
"upholding the image of the
University.”
National competition
provides one portion of the
image change, says Woodruff.
Signaling the move from en
tertainment to sport has been
the incorporation of more
gymnastics and stunts in their
routines, says Woodruff, who
is one of 20 cheerleaders to
make the All-American Col
legiate Team.
A segment of the groups
new image was unveiled dur
ing halftime at the UCLA game
Saturday night. The cheer
leaders debuted their dance
team segment with a dance
segment from "Chorus Line."
"Our new image is to portray
a squad that excells in perfor
mance, does outstanding
stunts and works well
together,” Woodruff says.
"We know what it takes now to
be a good cheerleading
squad.”

Wrestlers pin 16th victory
For the second night in a row,
a Dan Cook pin won the match
for Oregon, as the Ducks
squeezed past the University of
Northern Iowa 21-15 Monday
night.
The Oregon heavyweight
pinned John Kriebs midway
through the second period, to
gain the win for the sixth-ranked
Ducks. Sunday, Cook scored a
pin to lift Oregon over the
University of Minnesota, 24-17.
“We wrestled very well to
night, with everyone really help
ing out,” said coach Ron Finley.
“Miles Hancock got us start
ed with a pin at 126 lbs. The
lighter weights came through
for us and got us going on the
right track.”
Cliff Porter, Bill Nugent, Jeff
Steubing also won for the Ducks
as they raised their season
record to 16-1.
“Ryan Kelly looked very good
tonight when he lost to Joe
Gormally, ranked second in the
nation, 5-4 in a very close
match,” said Finley. Kelly gave
up a penalty point which cost
him the match.
The Ducks face the toughest
team in the nation tonight, when
they meet the number one
ranked Iowa State team. Four
days ago, ISU shut out Minne
sota, 42-0.
“We will really be fired up
when we meet ISU,” said Finley.
"You don't need much more to
get your blood going than the
thought of meeting them
“They have a ranked wrestler
in just about every weight class.
Jeff Steubing will put his sixth
place ranking on the line when
he meets number one ranked
Perry Hummel.
"We hope to give them a
tough match and make them
earn every point that they get.
We’ll have to work to get any
thing we can.”
