Application deadlines looming for prestigious scholarships Students hoping to reap one of the four most prestigious Univer sity scholarships should act quickly to beat fast-approaching deadlines. Robert Berdahl, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sci ences, has set Oct. 13 as the deadline for contacting him about the Marshall Scholarship, while Oct. 31 is the final date to gain information on the Danforth and Truman Scholarships. Berdahl’s office is 114 Friendly. History Dept, head Robert Lang is the campus liaison for the Rhodes Scholarship. He should be contacted by Oct. 13 in 175 PLC. The Marshall Scholarship is awarded annually to 30 U.S. stu dents for two years of graduate study at any British university. A Marshall applicant must be a U.S. citizen who will have re ceived a bachelor’s degree prior to Aug. 31,1979. Applicants must not have reached their 26th birth day before Oct. 1, 1979. The deadline for receiving application materials is Oct. 22. The Rhodes Scholarship, the most prestigious international scholarship for students, holds an Oct. 31 deadline. Rhodes-eligible students must be unmarried U.S. citizens who have received their bachelor s degree by Oct. 1979. Applicants must have passed their 18th birthday by Oct. 1, 1978 and not have passed their 24th. Rhodes scholars will study in Oxford, Eng land. TheHarry S. Truman Schol arship is a government sponsored award that pays up to $5,000 per year, according to Berdahl. the Truman scholarship is in tended for students interested in public service careers to use dur ing their junior year at an accre dited U.S. institution. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens pursuing a bachelor’s de gree as a full-time junior during the year of nomination. Candidates must have selected an under graduate field that will allow ad mission to a graduate program leading to a career in government. Applications for the Truman Scholarship must also have a col lege GPA of at least 3.0 and be in the upper quarter of their dass. The application deadline is Dec. 8, 1978. The Danforth Graduate Fel lowships are “the best fellow ships available to graduating seniors,” says Berdahl. “Selected students may receive up to four years of support for graduate studies at American uni versities in all fields of liberal arts,” he adds. Fellowships are open to qualified persons who have an in terest in college teaching and who plan to eventually study for a Ph.D. in liberal arts.
