vP» C° Look forward to Santana, the Dead soon among many others For those of you who are staying through until summer term, or are going to be around anyway, there’s a full slate of musical events for the month of June. Here’s a run-down of concerts in Eugene: Tom Paxton — a refugee of the folk boomlet of the early sixties, Paxton has returned to America after several years in England. Paxton is still remembered for his older material, particularly “The Last Thing on My Mind,” “Bottle of Wine,” “Talking Pot in Vietnam Blues,” and “Ramblin’ Boy.” He has, however, re corded consistently throughout the seventies, including a live album with Ralph McTell. His latest album, New Songs from the Briarpatch, marks Paxton’s move to Vanguard. As usual, it includes a large number of topical songs, on such sub jects as Vietnam, Watergate, and capital punishment. Paxton will be at The Place June 8 for 8 and 11 p m. shows. Tickets are $3.50 in advance. Vassar Clements — Clements re turns to Eugene June 10 at The Place. Anyone who doesn't know Clements’ credentials by now probably doesn’t care. He has recorded with virtually every recording artist in America — the list here has 71, including everyone from Hoyt Axtonto the Monkees to Bob Wills. Clements’ fiddle playing first captured public attention on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle be Unbroken. He is known for his work with the Earl Scruggs Revue, John Hartford, the Grateful Dead and Dickie Betts. He has several albums of his own, including Vassar Clements and Vassar Clements Band. Show times are 8:30 and 11:30 p.m., and tickets are $4.50 in advance. Townes Van Zandt — According to Eugene's own Mickey Newbury, Van Zandt is “in the same category as Dylan and McCartney.” Unfortunately, aside from a handful of zealots, Van Zandt is about as well known as Patrick Sky (there are, in fact, similarities, but that’s another story). Newbury is not alone in his opinions. He has been called the “leading poet of our times.” If you look hard, you might find some Van Zandt albums around town. His Live at the Old Quarter was released within the last couple of years, though com posed of 1973 material. He also has a new album out. But most of his half dozen or so releases are, in the words of one writer, “as rare as eyebrows on an egg.” His music is, in a word, intense. Van Zandt's songs are mostly folk-blues country, sprinkled, says one reviewer, “with lines as wonderful as a Nietzsche epigram.” He has spent some time in a mental institution, and once fell out of a fourth-story window just to find out what it would be like. Van Zandt will probably be the most interesting show on this whole list. He will be at The Place June 14 and 15 at 9:30 p.m., and the cover charge will be $1. Grateful Dead and Santana — Would you believe a major rock concert at Autzen Stadium? Well, it’s planned for June 25. Tickets will be $10. Also at Autzen Stadium, on July 17, will be the Beach Boys and Steve Miller. No other information on that yet. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers— Petty s boys will drop in at the Lane County Fairgrounds at 8:30 p.m. June 12. Tickets are $6.50. Petty’s big hit right now is ‘ Breakdown.’’ Some people have called him “punk or “New Wave,” but Petty denies it. “I don’t have a razor blade. I’ve got a guitar. I mean, great, if you want to go out and burn Buckingham Palace, fine. But when you go out on stage that night, you’d better play. You just gotta back it up. EMU Cultural Forum adviser Frank Geltner explained that "several members of the band had become ill.” The group has been touring for two months and opted to cancel the EMU performance because of the illnesses.
