M Srhuli Rush sign-ups close today The Interfratemity Council is sponsoring a structured informal rush Monday through Wednesday for University men and the registration deadline is today at 5 p.m. During the three evenings of open houses, rushees will visit all 14 fraternities and have the opportunity to ask members about Greek life. Rushees are under no obligation to pledge a fraternity. Following all of the open houses, the rushees will be asked to give preference to six fraternities. It is then up to the individual houses to invite rushees back throughout spring term. For additional information, stop by Suite 3, or call Interfratemity Council at 686-730I. Kerns classes open now Spring term art classes for adults and children are offered at the Maude Kerns Art Center, beginning Monday through June 10. Registra tion for the 10-week term is today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the art center. Class tuitions vary from $20 for children s classes to $37.50 through $65 for adult classes. New adult classes include: Basic Design, Old Photographic Pro cesses, Traditional Quiltmaking, Block Printing and Life Drawing and Painting. Maude Kerns Art Cetner is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to promoting quality in the arts and crafts through classes, exhibitions, workshops, community projects and special events. The old W-4 form was revised to include a section for claiming ex emptions from tax withholdings. Interested persons may pick up the new forms at the payroll de partment at the business office. The W-4 exemption must be re filed each year by April 30 to main tain continuous coverage. Youth detention choices viewed Alternatives to confining Eugene juveniles in detention centers, such as Skipworth Juvenile Home, will be considered by the Eugene Commission on the Rights of Youth. At the commission meeting ear lier this week, members decided to devote the next month to look ing at other alternatives. Members were organized into subcommit tees to examine other options. Tne commission will consider the use or expansion of alternate facilities such as Looking Glass Family Crisis Intervention Center, the Christian Family Institute and youth group homes. Commission Chairer Don Chalmers said the entire commis sion will visit Skipworth. He said the visit would not be an “investi gation,” but rather an attempt to gather information about deten tion alternatives. I ---- Church leader to speak Hallam Shorrock, former director of Church World Service in Japan and Korea, will speak in Eugene Sunday at 7 p.m. and Monday at 8 p m His topic Sunday is “The Politics of Charity: The Japan-Korea America Triangle” at Central Presbyterian Church, 1475 Ferry St. Monday he will speak on “American Foreign Policy and Political Repression in South Korea” in the EMU. Shorrock spent more than 20 years in East Asia as a missionary From 1947-1954 he was a missionary-teacher in Japan. He served from 1954-1961 as executive director of Church World Service in Japan and South Korea and from 1961-1963 he was Asia Secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. He returned to Japan in 1963 to serve until 1969 as vice-president of International Christian University in Tokyo. He is currently Associate Director of Education Abroad for the University of California and a lecturer in Japanese. During the opening, hockey games, figure skating ex hibitions and public skating ses sion are planned. The staff will be at the rink to answer questions. Portland rabbi to talk Monday Rabbi Joshua Stampfer of Temple Naveh Shalom in Port land will speak on ‘The Impact of the Yiddish Theatre on the Ameri can Jewish Community” at the Koinonia Center, 1414 Kincaid St., Monday at 7:30 p.m. The talk is part of an ongoing series to talks by visiting rabbis organized by the Jewish Student Union.
