Washington band cuts first album By ANNA HOYT Of the Emerald A former University student relived some of his high school fame when he and his childhood fnends in BeMevtew, Wash, cut their first album. Eckener s Landing. John Ridgeway left the University last sity last year when ne ran out of money to join the Hugo Eckener Septet. The band made wrat they call a progressive jazz album dedicated to Hugo Eckener the world s greatest zeppenn pilot, who flew more than a million miles with out an. accident Ail songs on the aiburr with the ex ception of the classic, “Take Five,’’ were written by the band members. The two sax players, Mark Kelly and Diz Carroll, have been playing the sax ophone together since fourth grade, and have taken top prizes in Washington for their ability to play alto and tenor saxes Two of the band members, Dave and Sue Gerstenberger, are formerly from Cottage Grove Drummer Bob Ehrlich man is the son of none other than John Ehriichman of Watergate fame Baseplayer John Ellis decided the band had been jamming enough, with out informing the other members of his decision he presold albums to everyone he knew in Washington. Hugo Eckener Septet has played for Seattle s version of Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday . and plans to perform at Seattles summer Festival, Bumper shute.
