Art exhibits, a workshop and contest Art contest still accepting entries Robert Jergens, painter and educator of Cleveland. Ohio, and Paul Edwards, Chairman of the Art Department of Washington and Jefferson College, will be slide jurors for the Ninth W & J National Painting Show, to be held on the college campus from April 2 to April 29, 1977 The slide jurors will review the entries and determine the final works to be exhibited in the show. Jergens is a Cleveland native who graduated from Yale a Master of Fine Arts degree He has studied at several institutes in the United States and at the American Academy in Rome His works are pari of collections in Cleveland, New York, and in Rome and Bari, Italy He has ex hibited at the Museum of Modem Art in New York and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D C Edwards is known for his paint ings which he signs Pablo A na tive of Iowa and graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College with a Master Basketry workshop offered A two-day workshop in Pine Needle Basketry will be taught by Susan Marrant on Saturday. Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan 22 from 10 a m -4p.m at Maude I. Kems Art Center Cost is $15. The workshop will explore the basics of pine needle basketry using the traditional split stitches The week scheduled between the sessions is to allow students time to develop their work Registration must be made at the Art Center, 1910 East 15th Avenue, before 5 p.m. tomorrow afternoon Materials list available at registration. Architectural artist displays works Spokane artist Harold Balazs. widely known for his architectural commissions, will open a show of his recent works Jan 11 at the new Gallery West - Eugene. Mr Balazs, a graduate of Washington State University, has received awards from the Spokane, Seattle, and Tacoma chapters of the American Institute of Architects Balazs first received nationwide attention in 1966 when he was awarded the Gold Medal for Craftsmanship by the Ameri can Institute for Architects. Numerous awards and commis sions have followed as well as many one-man shows, including one at the Museum of Fine Art at the University of Oregon i.n 1972. In the past his arts and crafts have ranged from minature enamels on copper and smal "hand-holding" sculptures through very large pieces oi welded copper, cast concrete and wood construction, furniture mirrors, rugs, prints and large por celain on iron paintings. His cur rent show includes original prints watercolors, sculpture, porcelair on iron, and a uniquely designee rug. A few of Mr Balazs architec tural commissions include thi Spokane Airport — a sculpture en titled "Flying Machine," University of Washington coaches' buildings — carved cedar wall, Nortor Building, Seattle — twenty-tw< -foot totem copper sculpture, fivi large sculptures which are per manent installations on th< grounds of the Expo '74 ii Spokane. In October 1976, thi Kingdome Stadium in Seattle de dicated its first commissioned at — a Balazs porcelain mural. Eigh by forty feet, the porcelain panel: of Arts degree from Wichita State University, he has headed the W & J Art Department since 1966 He has won the Caldwell Award and Huntington Gallery Award Slide entries are being ac cepted until Jan. 31. Artists may enter two works in any permanent painting medium. Initial jurying is by colored slides, two inches by two inches, with no glass mounted or oversized slides ac depted. Entries selected for exhibit will be eligible for purchase awards and prizes totalling more than $1500, including the Pittsburgh National Bank purchase award The Ninth W & J National Paint ing Show will be held in conjunc tion with the college s annual Arts Festival. Local artists celebrate unhanging Open Gallery Northwest 775 E 25th, invites the community to an unhanging party this Saturday at 8 pm The party will mark the end of its current show, "Eugene Spectrum". "Eugene Spectrum” is com posed of over 50 works by 17 area artists including University stu dents and former students The «;how includes a wide variety of depict the wild flowers of the Northwest. Here in Eugene, the doors of the First Methodist Church were carved by Balazs. He also exe cuted the stucco-relief at the east end of the building, the cross in the sanctuary and the translucent onyx windows. The doors of Smithe & Crakes Insurance were also designed and made by Balazs. Gallery West is located at 1597 Oak Street. The show will con tinue through Feb. 3. The Gallery hours are 11-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and Sunday 1 -4 p.m. media, styles and sizes: oils, water colors, prints, landscapes, abstracts, fantasies and wood and metal sculptures, all contempor ary works. "Eugene Spectrum" will con tinue through Saturday at Open Gallery Northwest, 775 E 25th from 12-4 pm and at Solid In genuity, 197 Washington, 11-5.30 pm. The party will be at Open Gal lery Northwest. The exhibit, enti tled “Strictly Personal,” in cludes intimate portraits of fam ily members from a private col lection being shown publicly for the first time A After the Thiebaucl show, the Gallery will exhibit planetary models and works in various media by Oregon artist, Ralph Turner. Turner’s models of Jupiter are used by NASA, and he has recently completed a major study of Phobos, one of the moons of Mars. A scale model of Phobos will be a fea ture of the show.
