Local fete hosts square dance More than 1,200 square dan cers from Oregon, Washington and California will be at the Lane County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday for the 16th Annual Mid Winter Square and Round Dance Festival, according to Festival Chairers Ann and Larry Lauder dale of Eugene. The program will consist of ex hibition dancing, square and round dance workshops and many hours of sguare and round dancing. Rod Ashley is a student director of "Man and the Oregon Coast,'' the interdisciplinary spring term session sponsored by the insti tute. Applications for the session are available in 206 Science III and are due by Feb. 20. Applica tions for the summer session will be available through June. The institute is located near a rocky intertidal area, where many small animals can be collected for study, according to institute direc tor Paul Rudy. According to Mary Leitschuh, a student director of the program, the federal government is plan ning to purchase the upper end of the South Slough, where the insti tute will be working. She also said the room and board for the spring session is $40. The Emerald regrets the errors. Chinese feast begins festival The Chinese Student Associa tion (CSA) will hold its annual China Night festivities Sunday at 6 p.m. in the EMU ballroom The festivities will feature an au thentic seven-course Chinese dinner followed by dancing, sing ing, kung fu and a historical fa shion show. Cost of the festivities is $3 for adults, $1 for children under 12. Geologist gets federal grant University geologist Alexander McBirney has received a federal grant of $48,000 to continue his research of rocks around Skaer gaard Sound, a remote part of the coast of eastern Greenland The National Science Founda tion grant will allow McBirney to conduct his third expedition to the Greenland site this summer. The purpose of the research is to ex amine a large body of igneous rock, about five miles across, that rose onto the earth s crust as a liquid and crystallized slowly under very stable conditions.
